Hi,
The whole system just freezes (very randomly). Most of the times it does that in the first minute, after I've logged in with my default user account. It hasn't happened as root so far, but with every user account I've created.
Check file permissions on all files in the home dir and /tmp , making sure they are appropriate.
I did that and recognized that the link .Xresources -> .Xdefaults was owned by root, also group root. But could that possibly crash the whole system? Funny thing is that it really does not happen as root, but only as a normal user. So if anyone has any other recommendations, I'd be very very happy... Thanx in advance, Sebastian ________________________________________________________________ Keine verlorenen Lotto-Quittungen, keine vergessenen Gewinne mehr! Does the NumLock-key still working ?
bye adrian
Right after the crash, it works til I push any other critical key-combination, like ALT+CTRL+DEL of ALT+F* . When I do this, try to kill the X-Server for example, I can turn NumLock off one last time, and then the little light stayes black, no matter how often I push the NumLock Key again. It seems to work now, after I changed the owner of the .Xresources link in my user home-dir from root to the specific user. But I'm not sure, whether it was that or any other configuration I changed during the last 10 days.....;-) Regards, Sebastian
Alright, I traced it down to: the windows primary soundcard, I guess...? It is a Guillemot Maxi Studio Isis that does not have any working driver support for linux, yet (at least, it did not have it last year). So I bought another soundcard, that I can use under linux. I guess that the kernel in Suse 7.3 could handle the two soundcards, so long, the kernel in Suse 8.0 seems to have problems with the guillemot soundcard. How can I deactivate the loading of the modules for the Guillemot Soundcard (It is the "maestro" module)? When I log into kde 3 with root, I get the message: May 21 02:49:13 Halley modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 May 21 02:49:13 Halley modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0 May 21 02:49:13 Halley modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 May 21 02:49:13 Halley modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0 but any sounds are played via my second soundcard (Riva TNT 2). So, for me, it looks like the drivers above are meant for the guillemot soundcard..... I don't get these messages as a normal user on login, but instead the system crashes. So I guess, it all comes down to the guillemot soundcard. I hope, anyone can tell me, how to get rid of the soundcard, without removing it, cause I really want to use it in windows.....sometimes..;-) Regards, Sebastian
Hi, rather offtopic for this list, but I just noticed an interview with SuSE's Holger Dryoff where they are talking about SuSE 8.1 coming out in October, and the first United Linux Server-product a month later. http://mozillaquest.com/Linux02/SuSE_8-1_LSB_UnitedLinux_Stroy-01.html has the story. (yup, the url realy does say 'Stroy' for 'Story', and it works!) -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

8.1 coming out in October was the interviewer putting words in his mouth. HD said that the United Linux product will come in November, not that any other product would precede it. Maybe they will be giving out Betas at the Frankfurt Linuxworld at the end of October. Unlikely though . . -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

Michael Hasenstein of SuSE posted to their list on 07/29:
As I recall, the current version of S.u.S.E. was out at the end of the first quarter. Isn't the usual practice of S.u.S.E. to have a new version every six months, which would make the next version due at the end of September. Right? Or ...?
It's "SuSE", we removed the dots a long time ago, and a new version (8.1) is due in late September.

that sounds like a X Server or Hardware issue. bye adrian ********************************************************************** Adrian Schroeter SuSE AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19, 90429 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de (356 mails already received today.)
