RE: [suse-kde] KDE 3.4 files 9.2
Yes, I did ran it, and that had no effect other than revert back to the default welcome message and fonts in the KDM login screen. Users still cannot login via KDM. -- Regards, Vadym Krevs -----Original Message----- From: BandiPat [mailto:penguin0601@earthlink.net] Sent: Sat 3/19/2005 10:33 PM To: suse-kde@suse.com Subject: Re: [suse-kde] KDE 3.4 files 9.2 On Saturday 19 March 2005 03:36 pm, Vadym Krevs wrote:
Hmm, neither of the solutions discussed below work for me. I've upgraded to KDE 3.4 on two machines running Suse 9.2 Professional. Both machines had KDE 3.3.4 previously. Upgrade was performed via Yast2.
On one machine KDE works like a treat after the upgrade. No issues with arts or KDM, On another, no user can login via KDM - neither normal nor root - just like described below. Although starting X via "startx" works for any user. After some playing with the KDE startup scripts on the first machine, I've determined that the problem occurs on like 242 of /opt/kde3/bin/startkde:
LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit [...]
Have you tried running "/opt/kde3/bin/genkdmconfig" to generate a new kdmrc file/s? It sounds as if that might be your last resort. Leave the LD_BIND_NOW line alone, that's not causing you any grief to be sure. regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.8 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Sign at college bookstore: Accepted at more colleges than you were--VISA -- To unsubscribe, email: suse-kde-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands, email: suse-kde-help@suse.com Please do not cross-post to suse-linux-e ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. I found the same symptom when I upgraded my 9.2 system to kde 3.4. Eventually I figured out that the package "kdebase3-session-3.4.0-12" had not been installed. That contains only one file, /usr/X11R6/bin/kde. Without that, it's tough to get sessions started. I installed it and suddenly logins from kdm to kde worked again. Michael -- San Francisco, CA
One thing I've never understood (there are many, but this is just one of them).... why are there multiple kdmrc files on my 9.2 system, and which one gets used by kdm? /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.SuSEconfig /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc /opt/kde3/share/config/SuSE/default/kdmrc /var/adm/SuSEconfig/md5/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc If you run /opt/kde3/bin/genkdmconf it generates a new /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, but if you use kde to modify the login stuff it seems to write to /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc... then when you run SuSEconfig it whines: ATTENTION: You have modified /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm//kdmrc. Leaving it untouched... You can find my version in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm//kdmrc.SuSEconfig... The default kdmrc in /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm does not contain some of the options I'd like to have, like the ability to choose what OS to reboot into. Are some of those kdmrcs supposed to be symlinks? Thanks Michael -- San Francisco, CA

use: locate kdmrc | xargs ls -ltr The latest is most likely used by you. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

not necessarily so. /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc is the one used by kdm /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc is the one generated by SuSEconfig. so the first one should be nothing but a link pointing to the second one. bye, MH -- Die unaufgeforderte Zusendung einer Werbemail an Privatleute verstößt gegen §1 UWG und 823 I BGB (Beschluß des LG Berlin vom 2.8.1998 Az: 16 O 201/98). Actually, you can eliminate the /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/ files and I think you'll find it works better without them. I found just this morning that moving those files to a temp directory and regenerating new ones in /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm worked the best. I just created a temp directory , in case I needed to bring them back or compare later, in both locations, running /opt/kde3/bin/genkdmconf cleared some things up for me. I have not seen any files reappear in the /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm directory yet, except for the backgroundrc file, if you change that within the control center. It seems that only the /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm directory settings are used now. regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.8 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Sign at college bookstore: Accepted at more colleges than you were--VISA
