[opensuse-kde] KDE 4.7.0 on openSUSE 11.4
Is anyone experiencing long delayand extreme memory and disk usage on start of kmail in kontact? Example this morning: Took eight minutes before keyboard, mouse etc would respond. then another 2+ minutes for gui to display message all ready downloaded yesterday. Clicking on a message displayed a screen in the message window saying: Retieving folder contents (30 messages), never came back with contents. tried smaller folder 4 messages never back after 15 minutes. Killed kontact. During the above mentioned 8 minutes: CPU 1 100% at 1.596 MHZ CPU 2 100% at 1.596 MHZ Mem 100% of 7.996 MiB SWAP 21% 0f 10.236 MiB This was after clicking get new messages. Normally my system runs CPU 1 4-9% CPU 2 4-9% Mem 7-13% of 7.996 MiB SWAP 0% Updated KDE to the released version of 4.7.0 from repo Download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release/47/openSUSE_11.4 was running 4.6. (see Below for configuration) Running Kontact 4.7.0-9.4 Kmail 4.7.0-9.4 Questions: 1. Can I dropback to 4.6 version of kmail 2. I get a timeout on plasma? 3 Could Amarok cause this? It uses 49% cpu at startup but drops back fast. I'm sending this from Seamonkey MAil since Kmail is totally useless. I will wait until 4.7.1 finishes building for 11.4 in factory and try it. Then turn in bug if it also fails. I have 4.7.1 installed in 12.1 MS 5 with no problems (It on a seperate disk, same system. Also ran 4.7.0 with 12.1 MS4 no problems. Thanks for any response. ------- Russ openSUSE 11.4(2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop)|KDE Platform Version 4.6.5 (4.6.5) "release 7"|Intel core2duo 2.5 MHZ,|8GB DDR3|GeForce 8400GS (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.21_k2.6.37.1_1.2-6.1) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Same sometimes happens with my version. For me it fills-up the RAM if I synchonise a folder.
There can be multiple reasons. First, try disabling nepomuk. It's feeders hog the CPU from time to time. Make sure it does not filter, filtering still blocks everything else. Then check it's not the preload script – in case it happens right after starting the computer. Here preload never shows up with a high percentage in the kde widgets but if you use iotop and top you know why your system is down. Having nepomuk checking (not indexing) all files (which it does on every KDE start) and preload running at the same time will kill the system because nepomuk only disables itself when the CPU load is too high, yet hdd usage is far worse than CPU usage. There are also bugs in kmail2 which prevent the display of messages in a folder if there is an empty 1 byte file in the folder. You could also use strace to check what kmail is doing. In general these questions are better suited for the kdepim-devel mailinglist at kde.org since there are hardly any kdepim devs on this list. Sven Thanks I'll look at these suggestions. Can I turn off the filters in kmailrc or somewhere before i start kmail?

Sven Thanks I had to drop back to kde4.6.5 this morning inorder to get some work done correctly. Will try again.
I did verify that kde4.7.1 is working on 12.1 ms5 except it will not allow me to add new folders wxcept as a subfolder to one that already exists. The add folder function is greyed out. I will be trying new install of 12.1 ms5 as I want to replace the 320Gb drive its on with a new 1TB drive. The 320 is sda so I need to figure out how to replace it without problems booting. Presently grub boots from /boot on sda. will post results of new KDE when done. -- Russ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
