[opensuse-kde] First experiences with KDE 4.2
On Tuesday evening i updated to 4.2 on my Opensuse 11.1. I will just note a few experiences. 1. Dependency Issues when updating. Some KDE 4.1.3 packages just will refuse to be replaced and complain but if you look closely you can find a n easy solution to the dependency issues 2. Performance - Holy Cow - after the reboot after updating (logout - login was not enough) - i just couldn't believe my eyes. The System was flying. It is highly reactive and just showed me how slow KDE 4.1 and 3.5 were in comparison. I never really missed the performance before because i never had it but i dont want to go back. Great Job. 3. The visual Impression is pleasing - although i would suggest before update go back to the default theme - because my theme/color combination looked horrible right after the update - because it just did not fit anymore. 4. So far no problems with programms running and the startup Time of programms is greatly reduced on my system. My heartfelt Congratulations to all the KDE Devs - keep up the good work and KDE 4.3 will be close to World Domination. Ahem, Stefan, your report would carry more weight - in my lowly and humble opinion - if your address was not <skunze@novell.com> :-) :-) . Nevertheless I accept your comments because I take it that you are not one of the developers from Novell working on KDE :-) . Right? Me too.. You are nicer than I would have been though. I tried the one-click update and it worked pretty well. I wish I'd written the conflicts down. I just told it to ignore them, and off it went. If you haven't tried it, you should. It beats 4.0 and 4.1 a lot. Is SuSE going to be at Cebit? Yeah, they're great aren't they? And so flexible and everything: one can add or remove characters, add/remove motives, alter or make up facts. etc. A lot more fun than even watching FOX news. :-) :-)

Heh. I had pretty much an identical experience with KDE 4.2 (especially in regards with performance). Although for me, it was around the time of RC1. I was testing it on a virtual pc, and so impressed I actually put it on my stable machine :)

Can you give some details? What exactly needs to be resolved?

Wow, glad to hear - guess I will try it myself now;) Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform / openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Some packages are not ported from KDE 4.1.3 from opensuse11.1 kio_sysinfo for example, or compiz-kde4 is troublesome too I heard. It mostly works out by removing the things that stop you from updating, if you can live without them that is

I didn't see such a great leap, but it sure is very responsive nontheless

True, incredible how good it worked out to bring KDE4.2 to opensuse11.1 I hope this will be used as example to push updated versions of other applications into a semi official repository using the buildservice, quite like current KDE4:Factory where bugreports are valid in bugzilla.novell.com, this should help testing parts of factory before jumping in too early into a factory alpha where certain parts might be broken (openoffice in 11.1beta4 comes to my mind)
My heartfelt Congratulations to all the KDE Devs - keep up the good work and KDE 4.3 will be close to World Domination.

Not ported? It builds fine against KDE 4.2. And it now uses 11.1.1 as version as the Build Service has a bug which built "11.1" versions with lower release number as contained in openSUSE 11.1 release.

compiz-kde4 packages built against KDE 4.2 are btw available within http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_11.1_KDE4_Factor... http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_11.0_KDE4_Factor... While I agree, since NVIDIA released the 180.xx driver, I think one has to say though that this depends on your graphics set-up. Not a KDE issue but nevertheless, if your driver is not up to the job and you have enabled desktop effects, this will make KDE look slow. Hence, those that have slow reactions should disable desktop effects or install a driver that performs well.
