How do I install KDE 3.4.2 using yast?
Hello, I may be blind but I just can't find it.... Could please someone tell me what I have to do to persuade yast to install the new KDE version (BTW, running 9.3)? (I'd really prefer using yast instead of manually downloading all packages and using plain rpm for that) Thanks in advance, Andreas
In YaST, go into "Change Source of Installation" and add: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yast-source/ (or a local mirror) Then, go into "System Update" the 3.4.2 packages should be detected. You may need to manually resolve a couple of dependency conflicts. Kirk

I got a somewhat more general response, that I'm not sure how to interpret: "The installed product is not compatible with the product on the installation media. If you try to update using the current installation media, the system may not start or some applications may not run properly." This appeared during the "Analyzing your system" stage of "System Update" with the source being what you suggested above (ok, I broke it into two pieces, a server name and a directory on server, in the dialog box for "Change source..."). So, I have not yet gotten to the package listing and any dependency notices. Does the above message mean that something actually bad has been detected, and I should hit "Cancel", or is it just a generic warning that is "to be expected in this circumstance", and I should hit "Continue" and see what happens next??? Also, is it a problem to be running this YaST update/upgrade of KDE from KDE? Or would it make more sense to close KDE and run it from GNOME or from the text-based YaST? Kevin

Hi Kevin, At this point, with the new installation source added, use the "Install and Remove" software module. Select "Package Groups" as your filter (the selection box at top-left). In the left pane, scroll all the way down to the bottom and select "ZZZ All", which will cause every available package (at the installation sources /and/ on your system) to be displayed with it's current status vis a vis your system. In the right pane, right-click on any package, highlight "All in this list..." and choose "Update if newer version available" in the submenu. This will instruct YaST to upgrade everything on your system if a newer package is available. It determines this by comparing what's installed against what's available at the sources you've defined. Important: Resolve any KDE dependency issues by selecting to uninstall the current versions of any programs that normally come with SuSE, as many times the newer versions are rolled into new or differently named rpms and you can't directly trace the upgrade path. Example: the 'kdepim3" packages containing significant parts of kontact, which in turn contain parts of kmail.
I usually "Exit and Save Changes" instead of clicking 'Accept' so the Install and Remove Software module closes when the process is complete. Then I immediately log out and reboot. HTH & Enjoy! - Carl
