[opensuse-kde] Black background with Suse 11.2 and KDE4
I've been running KDE4 with Suse 11.2 for some months now, with no problems. Yesterday, the background to my screen suddenly went black. Open windows were unaffected, but I could see my theme, the task manager, etc. I couldn't open any programs other than the ones already open (and ones that they launch). This problem was system-wide, in that it affects all accounts on my machine. I thought I'd solved the problem after discussion with someone by email, by forcing KDE to recreate itself. I did this by mv ~/.kde4 ~/oldkde4 then relogging. This, in itself, seemed to make matters worse, so I went mv ~/.kde4 ~/newkde4 mv ~/oldkde4 ~/.kde4 and relogged. To my surprise, everything worked thereafter for a few hours. I think this was coincidence, because, after a few hours, the same thing happened and the "fix" didn't work anymore. I checked .xsession-error and it says /etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started. sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). Trying to start a default input method for the locale en_GB.UTF-8 ... There is no default input method for the current locale. Clearly plasma-desktop isn't running. Maybe it crashed. You can prolly try to restart 'plasma-desktop' by pressing Alt+F2 - which should also let you start other stuff, even though plasma-desktop is down. Normally the recommendation would be to 'rm .kde4/share/config/plasma*' to "reset" plasma. But since your problem is apparently systemwide, it'd be interesting to know if you're using the official 11.2 KDE (4.3.5), or some other unsupported version from the OBS. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Alt-F2 brought up a box which seems to have a search box and a couple of buttons. One of the buttons showed me running processes and asked if I'd like to kill one. The other button had a spanner on it. When I clicked that, the box disappeared and won't come back.

I moved plasma* into another directory (called "oldplasma"). When I rebooted the machine and relogged it showed me a black screen again. In fact, what is happening is that it briefly shows the desktop then goes black, and then the programs open. Before I moved plasma* I got my actual desktop. Now I get the default (again, for a split second).

It's the official version, as far as I know. Anyway, it's the one supplied with my OpenSuSE installation, -- All the best, John -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

The search box also lets you launch apps and run commands.. such as 'konsole'. Try launching konsole and run 'plasma-desktop' and see if you get any useful output about the crash. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for this piece of information, it was useful. I didn't know that before. In fact, the problem turned out to have been caused by inadvertently writing to the root filesystem and filling it up. Once the files were identified and deleted, everything worked, -- All the best, John -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
