[opensuse-kde] one login, two totally different KDE desktops, how?
Hi there, I'd like to achieve the followin, after logging in to my KDE desktop I want to have two different desktops, each with different icons for example. Currently you can set 2 different wallpapers for two different desktops, but there still is only one $HOME/Desktop folder. Is there a way to get a second "$HOME/Desktop2" that can be altred totally different from desktop1 (=$HOME/Desktop)? I hope I was able to express what I want in an understandable way ;-) Malte using openSUSE 10.3 with KDE 3.5 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Sounds like what you are looking for is to create a second user. Although you could conceivably login as the same user in a diferent desktop environment (gnome, fluxbox, etc) there is still a chance that you could create conflicts. By creating a second user you can do everything you are looking for without fear of conflicts. To create a second user open yast as root, go to security and users and work through the steps. Then you can easily login as the second user from your current login kde menu->switch user->start new session. Alternately you can wait until kde4 releases its implementation, called something like tasks or functionalities or workspaces (can't remember right now) Currently kde4 only lets you have 1 wallpaper though. hope this gets you started see ya -- dh -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Nope, I want to have 2 really seperated desktops for one user, not a virtual desktop. Currently KDE uses ~/Desktop for all virtual desktops. I wonder, why it has never been implemented to have its own desktop folder for each virtual desktop. As far as I know Windows Vista is capable of achieving this, Gnome as well... (...)

Exactly, this is what Gnome has, it is called "workspaces" if I remember correctly. I found discussions from 2003 at kde-forums.org, it is sad that within 5 years they have not implemented this, I'm surely not the only one who likes to have such a feature. Regards (and happy XMas!) Currently KDE uses ~/Desktop for all virtual desktops. I wonder, why it has never been implemented to have its own desktop folder for each virtual desktop. As far as I know Windows Vista is capable of achieving this, wouldn't know Gnome as well... not my cuppa tea, I'm to busy trying to learn to like kde4.xxx since it will be replacing a horribly usable, intuitive and functional kde3.xxx soon X-(
There are hacks you could use such as creating a folder named desktop(#x), open that folder using view icons with konqueror on your selected (#x)virtual desktop, turn off the toolbars and menu's, then setting the window preference to "behind all", "fullscreen", "no border". You could set up a profile for each workspace in konq if you wanted to as well. (or just save the session when you log out) Terribly hackish I know but it would come very close to what you describe without having to set up another user. in kde4 yoiu could achieve the same effect very simply using folder views, (only 1 wallpaper though

I think the term I was looking for is "Activities" I believe this will be implemented something like folderview but really have not paid that much attention.

Ok I think I was wrong about this part, (guess I was wishing that plasmoids would provide a function that might be useful to me) as far as I can tell plasmoids appear on all desktops so folder view won't do (at least not yet.)

Hey, this is a great idea! This is how I will do it. This is (L)Unix, you always can get somehow what you need ;-) Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

In KDE 4.2 there are activities that allow you to set-up two desktops. There is a opensuse 11.1 kde 4.2 live cd, so you can try it without installing. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

What about run a second KDE via something like KDEHOME=~/.kde_second DISPLAY=:1 startkde ? The location of ~/Desktop and other directories could be changed in kcontrol. I use a KDE4 with activities, so I didn't tested it.
