Hi All, Well I have to say "me too" on this update as things just did not go well when using the SuSE supplied KDE files. First of all my kmail went blank and would not display any mails. Fixed that by going to the settings and selecting Use Custom fonts. Chose a font that looked good and displayed good, so all is well there. I did notice while playing with QT, going back to the previous version, that the font display is much better in the new version 3.1.2! It does a very good job of working with the fonts. Can't do sub-folders any longer with kmail as David pointed out, although not a big problem for me, so probably won't miss it. Next little bug I ran into was Konqueror and displaying some sites. Can't display any of SuSE sites any longer as the text is just not there! Same problem with say http://www.cnnsi.com and http://packman.links2linux.de/, some graphics, some text, but mostly blank. What is that all about? KDevelop is really kinda flakey right now too as Steven pointed out and complained about. Makes it difficult to do any programming with that now. KWord gives sig11 when trying to do a print preview. Noatun won't play a mpeg movie clip. Some of these, while being bothersome, don't affect much in day to day operation, but others are proving to be a big PITA! Anyone else experiencing the problem with Konq on those sites? What about KWord crashing? I think Steven has found a few things to do about KDevelop, but his is still not playing nice with the system. Thoughts, suggestions or fixes anyone? The temporary work around is to change from CUPS in the printer dialog box to "Generic UNIX LPD System" (this will still use CUPS but through LPR). Another option is to change the order in /etc/hosts. Thanks Charles, It's at least nice to know what the problem is, but getting it to work again seems to be a problem. Anytime I start kprinter dialog, the program shuts down with a Sig11. It won't let me make the change at all presently. I looked at /etc/hosts, but did not find anything that might pertain to printing. Thanks at least for the heads up. You didn't read the whole bug report. It is a QDNS problem, ie, it can't find the CUPS server , that is why changing it to LPD in the print dialog work. No, I mean I really can't print! When I click on the "Print" button, I get the Sig11 crash of KMail again. KPrinter's window stays up ok without bombing out when I select Print from the menu, but actually clicking on the Print button sends everything into oblivion again. I have downloaded Kontact though and will compile it and if I read you correctly, it should take care of the kmail problems? Try printing from another KDE app and see. I have no problem printing from any applications after accidentally finding out that changing the print system works. I just double checked by printing from kmail (Kontact version) with no problems.
I have downloaded Kontact though and will compile it and if I read you correctly, it should take care of the kmail problems?
- From what I have been reading the past 2 days on this list and on SuSE English, a lot of people have been have problems with SuSE's kmail package for KDE 3.1.1 and others too. Even if install Kontact doesn't solve your problem, you will end up having a much nicer version of kmail. If problems persist, you might want to install the KDE 3.1.1 from the SuSE rpm's on kde.org which I have no problems with. OK, Charles, as you can see, I am using the newest KMail from the Kontact compile! Pretty neat with the new features. Don't understand everything yet, but those guys have been doing some work! I thought when I restarted KMail that the new Kontact screen would come up, but that was not the case as each program is still individual. Still can't print, so unsure where that is coming from at the moment. I will continue to research that problem as I get time. Kontact, like Koffice, is actually just a shell for the individual programs.

(1) Make sure you run ldconfig
(2) Get out of X and delete the directory:

I think you have configured the wrong prefix. I don't know, if the configure script of kontact recognizes KDEDIR aor if this var is set. I would check if "kontact" is in your kde binary directory, I assume /opt/kde3/bin. Use "which kontact" to do this. If it gives /usr/local/bin/kontact or /usr/bin/kontact, you have built it with the wrong prefix. In this case you have to uninstall all the apps from kontact. To do this, I would unpack the kontact sources again, run the same configure line as you did the first time (yes, the wrong one). After that you can try "make uninstall". I don't know if this is implemented, but I hope so. If not, you have to delete all the hundreds of files manually. Then configure with --prefix=/opt/kde3 and compile and install again. But if kontact is already in the right place now, I'm afraid I don't know a solution... But I don't think so :) Greets, Daniel

I would check if "kontact" is in your kde binary directory, I assume /opt/kde3/bin.
I use checkinstall to install my self compiled apps, this helps me to keep my rpmdb up to date as well as alerting me to conflicts. In this case (Kontact) I kind of expected something might go not to my liking. Sure enough when I checked the rpm created by checkinstall I was able to see that things were being installed in /usr/local... I opened a new console # rpm -e NameOfPackage (removed the package) # cd /kdepim... # export KDEDIR=/opt/kde3 (this has the same effect as configure with --prefix=/opt/kde3) # configure # make # su # password # checkinstall The export KDEDIR=/opt/kde3, command can be added to your ~/.bashrc or ~/.profile so that you won't need to use the configure with --prefix=/opt/kde3 option in the future. Thanks to everyone that had a thought about this and alerted me to the fact they were having the problems also. I have solved, or I should say using Steven Hatton's suggestions, the problems I was having with all the new KDE 3.1.1 stuff. It seems that SuSE's QT3 & kdelibs3 files are bad and you must compile those two things from the src.rpm's to make things right with your system. You need to compile and install qt3 files first before doing the kdelibs3 files. I now have a working kde again, with no problems on any sites in Konq. I can print in all my KDE programs using kprinter as well, but you still need to choose Generic Unix as your facility rather than CUPS. Still a bug there somewhere with CUPS & KDE. It still uses CUPS to print, but you can't choose that in the kprinter dialog as it will Sig11 on you. If anyone wants more details etc., contact me off list and I will try to help out. I also got a bonus from all this as well, as I got Kontact installed and if you will notice from my sig below, I am using the latest KMail. Very nice what these KDE folk are doing! Oh, as I have been having trouble getting the kontact rpm to another user, the file is too large for a single email, is there someone that would allow me to upload the file, so that others could get the file to install? The problem is actually in QDNS- KDE can't find the CUPS server. The temporary fix is already in CVS and I believe have been back ported. There is no point in really fixing the problem since they are in the process of replacing QDNS.
