[opensuse-kde] How do I import kDEPIM3 email to kdepim4 ?
For a long time now, I have been using the KDE3 version of kontact (KDEPIM3) for all my email. I'm trying to migrate this over to the version of KDEPIM4 that comes with opensuse 42.2. I just can't figure out how to do it. I've tried using the mail exporter tool, setting the program to look at a copy of .kde/share/apps/kmail/mail, but it never starts downloading anything. Can anyone walk me through this? Thanks, Bob -- bob@rsmits.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I would suggest you to move directly to the KF5 version already. KDE PIM 4.x is unmaintained since years, and only kept in Leap for ease of upgrades. What data are you trying to import? -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team GPG key ID: A29D259B

kdePIM3 was what I was trying to export, but no longer. The KDE 4 version of KDEPIM was awful, and the KDE5 version isn't much better. I'll just stick with KDEPIM3 for a superior PIM.) -- bob@rsmits.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I would just configure the maildir (or mixedmaildir) resource to use that mail folder. "Configure KMail..."->Accounts->Receiving, select the resource (should be called "Local Folders") and click on Edit, then choose/enter the folder. Or add a new one. As by default a maildir resource is used, you'd need to do that anyway if you used mbox folders in KDEPIM3 too. In this case you need a mixedmaildir resource. Kind Regards, Wolfgang OK. I have a copy of the mail folder from KDEPIM3 (.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail) in a temporary folder called temp. What do I label as Local Folders and where do I put it? I made no changes at all to the standard KDEPIM3 setup - does

That does not mean anything. KMail allowed to choose for each folder whether it should be stored in maildir (each message in a separate file) or mbox (all messages of a folder in one large file) format. IIIRC the default was maildir though, so a maildir resource should be fine. (though in my automatically migrated kmail setup, the "saved-messages" and "sent-mail" folders are in mbox format, I don't think I ever set that explicitly...) Actually, I would suggest to just add a new resource (in *addition* to the existing "Local Folders" one), and point it to the old location. Go into "Configure KMail"->Accounts->Receiving, click on "Add", choose "Maildir" or "KMail Maildir" (the latter is preferable if you are not sure whether you used mbox as well or not), and in the appearing config dialog choose the folder on the hard disk. You can then copy or move the mail from the one to the other if you prefer, and then even delete the newly created resource afterwards if you want. Or just continue to use the old folder. Alternatively, you could also just reconfigure the existing "Local Folders" resource to point to the old location (select it in the Accounts settings and click on "Edit" instead of "Add"), but then you'll lose possibly existing mails in the new location of course (and it wouldn't work with mbox folders as mentioned). But you can have as many mail resources as you want/need anyway, so I'd probably prefer the first way.
