i tried to install KDE unstable repos again, but any zypper dup (or the yast equivalent) with KDE unstable enabled wants to downgrade a hell of a lot of packages, switch to "inferior" 586 architecture for most of the others, and generally create havoc with my installation, i'm afraid.
upgrading to KDE-factory instead of unstable i get the result expected: lots of vendor changes, but no downgrading or architecture change. probably wasn't a good idea to go for unstable, since soon (november i think) KDE-factory is going to become 4.6--that's as far ahead as i want to go, actually.
Correct, KDE:Unstable:SC (fka KDE:KDE4:UNSTABLE:Desktop) currently contains the very first snapshots of what will be 4.6, so these are pants-on-fire unstable atm.
if anybody else wants to use KDE 4.5 with oS 11.3, you should read the following. not knowing this earlier cost me like one day and most of a night before i got it finally working. KDE 4.5 (factory) installs ok, but once i rebooted, i couldn't log into KDE anymore. a box pops up, saying "Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation," dropping me back to the kdm login. in .xsession-errors some more errors show up, indicating an auth.-file with different ownership than KDE expected. even deleting .kde4 or creating a new user acct. didn't help. google found a lot of confused forum topics, none of them offering real help--until i came across a forum post at forums.opensuse.org, where somebody recommended running zypper dup after installing KDE 4.5, and this worked for the OP. since i considered my (3rd) installation of 11.3 messed up already, i ran zypper dup with all repos enabled--something i don't normally do. i have no real idea how zypper dup decides what to do with different repos enbled, but after running the command, i can log into KDE again, and everything works as it should. KDE is still at 4.4.95, and whatever caused the ksmserver error is gone. so in order to use KDE 4.5 with 11.3, the following process works: 1. install KDE factory via one-click or whatever; 2. everything goes down the drain; 3. run zypper dup with all repos (OSS, non-OSS, update, and KDE factory) enabled and voila, everything works fine. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
