What problem do you have or want to solve, Hans? 1. Start on boot could not work, search is user-specific so it only works after logging in... And it always runs if enabled, and does not run if disabled. (you disable it by adding your homefolder to the 'do not index' list - there's nothing to index so it won't start). 2. Run once and exit Run once and then do what? Search is always there so you can use it - if it would not run, you can't search. I guess you mean the indexing, you want to quit after indexing everything? Then it would not see any changes and give 'old' results when you search. Why would you want that? If you don't want it to use power when you are on battery, that is already done: search won't index anything other than the file name (which is so fast it really takes no power) when you are on battery power. Perhaps you can explain what problem you have, so we can see what solution would work best? Sorry for the hard questions, but the developers do not want to add more complexity unless there is a problem that is solved by the extra code ;-) Cheers, Jos
Thanks, Hans

I understand WHAT you want, but do not understand WHY. Why would you manage this by hand? Most of the time, you don't need the USB support in the kernel, but you can't turn it off. Most of the time, you do not need the wireless or wired support, but you can't turn it off... I asked what BENEFIT you're looking for... What is the problem you have that this would solve? The indexer doesn't run all the time, it only runs when there is something to index. It isn't like it is crawling through all of your files and when done, starts again... So there is no real downside to having it available while you're working. For example here, baloo_file_indexer uses 10.9 mb of ram and I have 8.8 GB of ram in use on this system. That doesn't seem to be a problem... The mail indexer uses 500 mb of ram... There IS a problem there, yes, I understand from Vishesh that this has to do with the Xapian index library being unable to let go of memory or something. Then again, I have a single Chromium tab eating 686 MB of ram, so Chromium continues to be the king of memory leaks on Linux. Bugs, bugs...
(This is no problem or additional complexity, maybe a present for christmas.)
Well, adding extra functionality like you ask for creates extra work and complexity for the developers. If that brings a benefit for many users, it is worth it. But if there doesn't seem to be a benefit, well, they probably should not do it ;-) Cheers, Jos

Add the KDE Extra Unstable repository for openSuSE 13.1... http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Unstable:/Extra/openSUSE_13.1... ...and install the "baloo kcm" package. It adds a "Desktop Search - Advanced" item to "Configure Desktop" and gives you much finer grained control, including the ability to switch it on and off with a simple checkbox. Almost like nepomuk's old control panel. :) Yes, it is still under development and it is not (yet) part of the official repositories but IMHO it should be pushed upstream. Kudos to the developer who contributed this - it should really have been part of the baloo package from day 1. It also adds the ability to tell baloo exactly what extra directories to index, not just what to exclude. Negative AND positive control. Much better. :) -- ============================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au ============================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I suppose the problem is becouse baloo is experimental and sometimes it sucks resources so you want to stop indexing, that is very easy to do pushing a button than add or remove a folder that you would like to index later when the pc is idle, not to search..:-) :-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, much better! I do have a usability question. The 'file manager' mode of Konqueror seems to be 'embedded dolphin'. I'm not sure. I had baloo installed and it seems it was running, before I installed and configured that. I'm convinced it has all of /home/anton already indexed. Suppose I want ONLY /home/anton/Documents indexed? I can set that up with the kcm. Good. But does that mean everything else under /home/anton gets removed ? The evidence I have so far seems not.
