After editing my ~/.bashrc, I logged out and logged in again to admire my handiwork, only to find that kmail had completely forgotten about all my accounts. It had remembered my folder structure, and all the messages were there, it remembered my identities but all my receiving and sending accounts had disappeared. Fortunately, I was able to restore a backup copy of /home/bob/.kde4/share/config/kmailrc and all is well again (I think).
