Hi All! Maybe someone can help me. I recently updated to the 3.3.2 supllementary fork at ftp.suse.com. Everything seems to be running fine so far, but when I opened the control to look at my video settings I got this error message in YasT: "To access the X11 system, the XFree86 package must be installed. Do you want to install it now?" ?? Huh ?? If XFree86 is not a part of (current) running filesys, then is Xorg supporting all graphics independently? I'm using a Viewsonic P225fb (22") w/ ATI Radeon 7500 and getting edge-to-edge display at 1600X1200---no problem; rock steady. How to deal with this? Re-install from 9.1 Pro DVD, Then maybe YOU update to newer security & other XFree86 patches or.....? Any suggestions or someone who had same problem?? TIA --- robert ===== Have A Healthy, Prosperous Day!! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - now with 250MB free storage. Learn more. http://info.mail.yahoo.com/mail_250

Xorg is a replacement for XFree86. So, if you have Xorg running (installed) then it means that XFree86 is not running (installed). I do not think this has anything to do with KDE. What it is that you would like to do with your video settings? Most likely, there is a way to change them for Xorg without having to use yast2. -- Osho
Thanks for quick reply. I simply wish to enable 3D to the extent possible w/ATI RADEON 7500 (64mb), and otherwise verify that all is well w/graphics settings. What to read 1st to become well informed about Xorg? TIA --robert --- Osho GG <oshogg@gmail.com> wrote:

Robert, You might want to join their mail list, if you are interested in the development of Xorg. It's simply a branch from the original XFree86 files after those guys decided on an unnecessary licensing changes. Actually, the Xorg project is moving along much faster and smoother than the XFree86 ever has! Again, though, if you are interested in taking part in the development or in just how it's going, visit their site and/or join their mail list. For setting up your Radeon 7500, try this: ctrl-alt-F1 (takes you to a text only terminal) login as root type: init 3 (quits X and drops you to text only) press enter type: sax2 (this will start the program to setup all your graphics) finish up sax2, return to the prompt type: init 5 (to get back to your desired GUI) good luck, Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"
For the ati Radeon 7500 you need to install the proprietory drivers from ati in order to enable 3D. A wotd of warning. This isnt as straight forward as it seems! Or maybe it was just me :/ BandiPat wrote:

No, you don't Jim. The radeon module is included in the kernel and using only sax2 to setup, will get you 3d quite nicely. I am not even sure that ATI has released their driver to work with the 2.6.x kernel yet? I haven't checked in a long time though, because it just hasn't been necessary to do so. The 7500 is well supported already, as are most all of the other radeon cards. The Xorg guys have done a lot of work since branching off and I believe ATI have been cooperating with them. regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"
OK I didn't realise that....sorry! Is this just for Xorg? I am running 9.1 Pro and Xfree 4.3.99.902(4.4.0 RC2). When I try to turn on the 3D in Sax2 i get a message stating "The installed card cannot use hardware 3D/Open GL acceleration". Is it straight forward enough to install Xorg over Xfree? Cheers, Jim BandiPat wrote:

Hmmm, now that is odd, because unless you are running your own kernel rather than the SuSE kernel, it should work in your present setup, unless too you are using a newer, unsupported version of XFree. There are replacement Xorg files from SuSE for 9.1 and I highly recommend them, yes! Here's your location to download: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/X/Xorg/Xorg-X11R6.8.1/i386 I have the 9200SE model and the only time I used the ATI drivers were under 8.2 or 9.0 while playing with one of Mantel's experimental kernels that didn't have the radeon module. Oh, be sure to update your sax2 files as well from that same site, just go back a few steps from the Xorg files. Everything should replace the XFree files without problems and the newer sax2 will give you the tools needed to work with Xorg efficiently. A simple rpm -Uhv and you will have Xorg. OK thanks again.................Ive got the rpms and installed them. Configured Xorg........................ahem I forgot I upgraded the vid card to a Rad 9600 a few months ago :/ It doesnt seem to want to run 3D......trawling the net it seems that this card is maybe too new for the drivers to be available? Yours confusing everyone :/ (Sorry) BandiPat wrote:
