after running polkit --user ... I found my users had no rights. A bit of investigation and a look in the security section i found that changing the overall security from secure to easy provided me with the appropriate policies. I'm not sure the settings are really appropriate for the secure settings on a laptop/desktop. not being able to suspend it or hibernate it let alone mount cds/dvds etc... Maybe these settings are more appropriate for paranoid Anyway the problem is solved just need to work out what else I have opened up.
