Fwd: Re: [opensuse-kde] [Leap 42.1] Installing Plasma 5 does not set displaymanager

I installed plasma5-desktop on a Leap server that was already running XFCE. Upon doing this and rebooting I was greeted with a fallback login screen (looked similar to IceWM). Upon checking the wiki I realized I needed plasma5-session but installing that and rebooting did not help. I then tried patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis and rebooted but the issue was still not resolved. Thanks to some help on IRC I discovered that in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager the DISPLAYMANAGER variable was set to "". Changing it to DISPLAYMANAGER="sddm" and rebooting resolved the issue.
I dont know if this was caused by the order I installed the packages (since I did desktop before I did session) but I just wanted to see if anyone else could reproduce this?
Were you unable to log into the plasma5 session from your xfce display manager (gdm?)? I don't think installing plasma5 should change the display manager on people. They might just want to play around with Plasma5 as a secondary desktop. And not have the good sense to migrate fully >:-) (I accidentally replied off-list, so forwarding to the list also) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

The thing was, GDM (or whatever the XFCE install uses) was not starting, I was stuck with a fallback login screen that did not show any obvious way to change the DE. So I logged in, which took me into XFCE where I made the changes and then rebooted to get sddm. I agree that the installing plasma5 should not change the users display manager but I dont think it should cause the user to have fallback one either :) - -- Regards, Uzair Shamim -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJWI0wAAAoJEKk4ocK8JbkdzSUP/1LXA6A9IuA/nNlCw7jk5WUy HCUrcKfiB6117iOlfp3GZO2BRlbaX5Ag4Rk6NHcgvBdnp2xYnBMCyhhMv8Zec27t Uer2JLyoBTE1hl0fwoXG7vFmZFTrtUbsFh74ZIoc/xQLjec6wt21sKMlRvhr0oLe MA+HDmOGTEgCtx5MEr5yICgWSKD7q/naWIsl98lJ9E9lOvSLPRL3cbK44D1axRqj xs3kinaiS+ga0en3W+G0Tv9GOAlBw1llXCDhaHWOro4RCzK1SHx33gE/3Q8sDOpT TYDafoRaIO+q8NJ9NJ5HPUXxCc1FQGbRoUUSr5Ygx5T+5uwHmT4YvjDq/nbfIQ+p qmlIqUd4RJpgWANGOeItJWhAvUvJEnrw4bS/E2Mwospf2mf5qJ8jbhnal/6rsmoB ckHi/2cCan1/W17Lfb6MWLo/TPE5AA7k8JdyIdwb/7kDPRqZiiPUfeXd6BAMKKk+ fJq83qBHWNU8BptfO5l/HbVWdG3bMLCaj96OiEL1ER15VEJaR5+C2gQMNith7FtE 6QW7Xqkvgu5Q4vlutbucDqYKdZpwqmU0xBVgFdAlPrFWE3oRq6vY54/zqcuC7aYB kluaL85kLGSk6uVk32nm8pC/CihCiHN7wtaI+R4k1llFXSWcacUUZ14MMnrth7SC YNhJs1AZq6R0nSQc8YsZ =Ihjs -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
