[opensuse-kde] Kwin- Xrender or OpenGL?
Hi all, I've been trying out KDE 4.6 for the past few weeks since it was released, and to my very pleasant surprise...its been pretty darn stable on my modest Thinkpad SL400c w/ 2GB of RAM and Intel 4500MHD graphics driver. There's one wrinkle and thats Kwin under OpenGL which renders fonts incorrectly for my development environment (LabVIEW) when compositing is turned on. Seems like a regression from Qt 4.6 to 4.7. Also, OpenGL is sluggish and freezes when clicking OK in systemsettings. Xrender on the other hand is rock solid and stable. No problems with font rendering and absolutely no lockups or freezes. Heck, I'd call Kwin+Xrender to be smoother and lighter than Compiz on GNOME under 11.3. My question is, what are the advantages of using OpenGL as compared to Xrender? Is OpenGL any better than Xrender, if so how? Thanks! -Anshul -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yep, I disabled blur and ensured that the Lanczos filter was blacklisted in kwinrc. No luck
and freezes when clicking OK in systemsettings.
Its still buggy for me. I'll comment in that bug report- thanks for giving me the link.

XRender and OpenGL exercise different driver features, drivers with lacking or bad OpenGL implementations will have to use XRender, etc. Also, XRender doesn't support all effects. Usually, the preferred way to use compositing will be OpenGL, or in the future (4.7) OpenGL-ES. -- sebas http://www.kde.org | http://vizZzion.org | GPG Key ID: 9119 0EF9 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
