[opensuse-kde] Re-made of wiki pages : http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Repositories
(tigerfoot speaking) As discussed on IRC Meetings, I would try to re-organize the wiki pages http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Repositories and perharps all one-click install found here http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/KDE4#Installation Objectives : Try to give a clear & simple (as much as possible) way to explain noobs how to install / get / maintain their kde desktop up to date with a clear identification about the status of kde and for which version of openSUSE. Most of the informations present should be valid for the 11.2 release, making the process to adjust this wiki page at time for translators. (Most other language are out of date) Findings : Even if I'm a kde enjoy's man, and works from years now with the differents repositories, I should recognize, it's not so easy to understand, or to explain to a noobs ( in repo tree structure and wiki page ) where thing are, and how/what a user have to activate to get the "best/fresh" kde for it's openSUSE. Why ? We face 2 problems with the frequent jump from stable to special extra-ordinary repos ( think about 42, and 43 now ) due to the phase of stabilization (and for 11.1 to the fact of SLES/D using 4.1.x ). Changes vision : 1) 42 repo Start with something quiet easy : did we keep the 4.2 on the wiki page ? I would drop them as it's has been declared deprecated or unmaintained, (see meetings notes) Until the repo will be deleted from obs & mirror, people using it doesn't see a difference. If they come to the wiki page, they will see there an new version and will adapt their yast repo, no ? 2) 43 repo A transitional repo with no Backport or Community package available for +- 25 days ( 11.2 release ) and after what would it become ? (Not really clear in my mind) 3) STABLE actually KDE 4.1.3 Stable If I understand clearly ( perharps it's just because I've not the tree of the mirror with what is a symlink on ). would become 4.3.1 just after the release of 11.2 Could we already change this ? Same remarks as for 42 package ( until the underlaying directories repos are not change people won't be bother ) But after 11.2 people working on a 11.1 + kde/stable would see a kde upgrade to 4.3.1 (right ?) 4) KDE 3.5.10 Put this one on the bottom of the page even after the Qt section. 5) Micro-Changes or No-Changes : 5a KDE-Backport : add a 11.2 link and remove 10.3 Perharps someone could find a more clear phrase (or add a clear exemple when & why to use these repos) in place of "You do not need to update your KDE as well, but you can do so, because KDE is forward compatible" and the french version :-) 5b Factory : add a comment on what version it would contain after 11.2 5c Trunk - no changes 5d : All removes of 10.3 links. 6) About the one-click install and auto-suggestion on yast community-repo (last one is the most used by noobs, and users who don't knows how to go to the wiki page) As someone check on rc1 which repositories are proposed to users in yast ? I agree that some change of concept is called for with regard to available KDE versions for openSUSE. In my experience most users want to keep their system updated with the most recent KDE version which is "labeled stable upstream". This is of course possible, but with the present labelling of available versions on the wiki it takes a lot of reading between lines and even some educated guessing to find the correct repositories to achieve this goal. I think there should be some sort of "main repository" for KDE on the top of the wike page, clearly labelled as "the most recent stable upstream version", which I suppose right now would have replaced the repository labelled 43. You may notice that I'm not 100% certain that this really IS the most recent stable upstream version. That might be because I am a bit dense, but it might also mean that the array of KDE repositores is rather confusing.
