[opensuse-kde] Branding for Plasma 5.8
Hi everyone, Plasma 5.8 and its new designs of login, splash, logout and lock screens hit Krypton now. This of course broke our branding package: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/KDE:Unstable:Frameworks/plasma5-open... So, to fix this for Krypton and ultimatively also TW and Leap 42.2, I'm asking whether and how we would want to customize those. SDDM Login: http://susepaste.org/view/raw/15935331 QML Splash: http://susepaste.org/view/raw/83781575 Lock Screen: http://susepaste.org/view/raw/56114026 Logout: http://susepaste.org/view/raw/51248390 Obviously the upstream branding is still available as plasma5-workspace-branding-upstream. For now I will simply remove all patches in our branding as they don't apply anymore, to make Krypton build and work again. (This mail got sent to [opensuse-kde] and [opensuse-artwork], but please keep the discussion on [opensuse-kde] to not lose any messages and avoid duplicates) Thanks, Fabian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I think the original plan for Leap was to keep the same artwork for the entire 42.x series. So ideally I guess the Leap 42.1 theming should be "ported" to the new upstream designs. No idea how difficult that will be. I guess the same applies to Tumbleweed. But Tumbleweed users have thicker skin. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

The problem (5 cents question) is *who* is going to do that. ;) We had already dropped a part of the branding due to manpower, technical and design (in the graphics sense) issues. Since then the situation has not changed. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team GPG key ID: A29D259B

From looking at the screenshots how hard can it possibly be? The some background image instead of the KDE background resp that aggressive blue and possibly an openSUSE or Leap logo instead of the KDE one in the splash screen. The images should exist in other branding packages resp the previous KDE theme already. If we fail to achieve that due to manpower I wonder how the Plasma 5.8 integration is supposed to work at all. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.com/ SUSE Linux GmbH, GF: Felix Imendörffer, Jane Smithard, Graham Norton, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Probably not too hard.

It is going to work: however, "look and feel" changes are often pushed down the queue, because of other, more technical changes that require more attention. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team GPG key ID: A29D259B -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Ludwig, Is this really a fair statement that you are throwing here at a small community team ?? The team is doing its best it can to get everything ready and stable for the Leap 42.2 and then you are coming up with the statement that if they can't fix the branding then you are doubting if the Plasma integration will work at all. What about the artwork team ? Wouldn't it be much more logical to have the artwork team taking care of the openSUSE and Leap branding instead of throwing this back at the teams that have to take care of all the technical items ? Aha! That maybe explains something. I'm just a user, longtime, though not a developer nor even a power user. But I've wondered why it was thought necessary to mess about with the good (and attractive) branding of Leap 42.1. I like the green lightbulb and animation, and reasons for changing it to the comparatively insipid new offering weren't obvious, at least to me. But if resourcing is the issue, that's understandable. -- Robin K Wellington "Harbour City" New Zealand -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

My "lazy" solution would be to replace the blue background with green.

Have these hit Leap 42.2 or tumbleweed yet? and can you point me to the packages? now that enlightenment is done for the most part I might be able to find time to do something simple and easy. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adeliade Australia, UTC+9:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

Personally I would prefer the wallpaper too, I couldn't get used to that solid one-coloured background yet... ;-) And it would probably not look that completely different from 42.1 then. A background wallpaper can be set in the settings, so this wouldn't even need patching. I tried that today on a Krypton LiveCD, and there's one problem though: the buttons are basically invisible when using a dark wallpaper. This was with the Tumbleweed one, but I suppose with Leap's black one it may even be worse. I hope upstream improves this, because a user can set any wallpaper (s)he wants.

Replacing the kde logo with the light glob from the leap wallpaper in the QML splash would also help
Or with the openSUSE geeko, as we do currently and already did with 5.7beta (which first introduced the new splash screen, that was reverted to the old one for 5.7.0 final). I would actually prefer that, as it is the status quo, and we wouldn't have to come up with something else for Tumbleweed (which will of course get Plasma 5.8 too after it has been released), would also ease maintenance a bit.
Lock Screen: http://susepaste.org/view/raw/56114026
again the default wallpaper will probably work as a background here
This one even let's you choose between different wallpaper plugins now (the same as for the desktop itself) in the settings, one of them is the solid color (the actual color is configurable), and a standard wallpaper is possible too. So we'd just need to install an appropriate config file I suppose. But the same applies here as for the login screen, it also has the same problem with the buttons, they were nearly invisible with the Tumbleweed wallpaper...
I don't think theres any branding here that we should really worry about (other then the wallpaper which needs to be done)
The logout screen doesn't have a wallpaper, it is semi-transparent. I.e. the "wallpaper" you see on the picture is the desktop shining through.

They are also part of plasma-workspace, in the lookandfeel folder: https://quickgit.kde.org/?p=plasma-workspace.git&a=tree&h=6273598397a2925e066aae218d4489af3dead65c&hb=86af75bc112fbebc31dc7dc4e90b1e1186512aad&f=lookandfeel %2Fcontents

No. This is Plasma 5.8 stuff, which isn't even beta yet.
and can you point me to the packages?
KDE:Unstable:Frameworks, or a Krypton LiveCD. Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
