[opensuse-kde] updated to KDE: 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0) "release 88.2" : all icons disappeared
Hello! I updated openSUSE 11.1 to the KDE version named above, it is from the factory repo. When I logged in, I was surprised, all icons i have defined in the system tray were gone, also all icons i defined in an additional bar... Where does KDE 4.2 store these icons? I can't change them with a right click, they are like "locked". Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Sounds like you're talking about plasma applets and shortcuts. They're stored in .kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc I had major weirdness with plasma after updating from kde4:/factory today too. With plasmoids behaving strange and my wallpaper switching and whatnot. These kinds of things are to be expected when using factory repo. The easiest solution is prolly to reset plasma and reconfigure from scratch. There's this magic command that solves almost any problem with plasma: 'kquitapp plasma && rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma* && plasma &' Only downside is you lose all your desktop and panel settings of course ;-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Ok, thanks, but since my desktop is a bit messed now, I can't say whether it looks okay or whether plasma* is messed too now...

Really....? I hoped they would test it themselves at least...

Sounds like "we had to destroy the village in order to save it"... ;-) I try to restore my desktop and then wil save ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma* and when the desktop gets messed again, restore this backed up files and hope it fixes it... Hi Malte, Many bugs in KDE4 are related to nvidia and ati proprietary drivers, and that is what no one without appropriate hardware can't see. With nvidia FX 5200 until last driver update (legacy 173.xxx series), I had garbled desktop when OpenOffice is running and the window has focus (it is active), when some other window has focus, all was fine. Knode setup screen was gray without anything in it. Everything was somewhat slow even with desktop effects disabled. I'm sure there was more that I haven't seen as I didn't use many programs before driver issue was fixed. With nvidia MX 4000 I had console text garbled, almost all GTk applications had the same problem (this includes Firefox), KDE3 konsole was filled with garbage, though Xterm was OK. KDE4 I can't remember, as it was slow I was avoiding it. Slowness was probably also due to driver issues. As you can see 2 different adapters and 2 different sets of problems. They test what they can, the rest is up to us. That is the reason to include hardware information for part that failed, so that other with same hardware can test it, or simply confirm it. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

panel settings: now hoover over the disappeared icons and remove them from
Same over (I think), just click on the peaner on the right side of the panel - the panel. Next step is to add them back to the panel. To do this open the start menu right click on the app to be added to panel and select 'add to panel'. That did it for me. -- Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I've added them again. But, guess what happened when I logged in again... they disapeared again and my desktop wallpapers and color settings were reset to some kind of default... very annoying, but, there seem to be a new update again this morning, I hope it will improve things... don't they test every release? Same here and guess - the update this morning did NOT fix that. Only solution here was already mentioned by Martin Schlander - after reconfiguring everything is now fine again here. After logging in again it was messed up again. My suspicion is, that this release of KDE 4.2 starts with some kind of weird default settings, for example, my desktop now starts with a new panel on the right side which I have never wanted and configures. I created a new panel and see, KDE does not touch this new panel! But it always starts with this strange new panel, I now wonder, where is the "/etc/skel" of KDE? Where does KDE take these defaults from? Regards Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Here it can remember settings. Check write permissions for ~/.kde4 folder. It is acting like it can't write settings. I had this too when I updated Qt and restarted. Perhaps related =)
