[opensuse-kde] Losing plasmoids, widgets, desktop settings after reboot
I have a problem that is happening on just one of my systems running openSuSE12.3 x64, KDE Platform Version 4.10.5 "release 1" that I could use some help getting it fixed. I set up my desktops with various background pictures, widgets, etc which all works fine until I reboot the system. Then all is lost and my desktops revert back to the default background setting without any of the widgets I had put on the desktops. How should I proceed with tracking down what is wrong, as I mentioned this is only happening on one system, my other laptops and computers running the same version of openSuSE and KDE are working fine! What is different on a laptop that has a problem? It appears that configuration is not stored, or KDE is not looking at your home dir for some reason. That could be problem with write permission in your $HOME/.kde4 directory. There is few reasons that I can list from top of my head: You ran some configuration with administrative privileges and user environment variables, like it happens with command "su". You reused old home partition and update did work well on .kde4 directory. Your update did not work well and some library is either corrupt, or not correct version. There could be other problems, like having dying hard disk, so you experience intermittent errors. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I do not know what is different about the desktop in question from other desktops or my laptop that does not have the problem.
It appears that configuration is not stored, or KDE is not looking at your home dir for some reason. OK, and how would I determine that this is the problem?
That could be problem with write permission in your $HOME/.kde4 directory. There is few reasons that I can list from top of my head: The permissions on my .kde4 directory seem normal, I am the owner, and users is the group. Just for grins, I did a "chmod -R ugo+r .kde4" to make sure anyone can read the files within the directory or its subdirs. I do have write permission on the directory and it appears that I have write permission on everything within the directory and its subdirs.
You ran some configuration with administrative privileges and user environment variables, like it happens with command "su". Not that I know of.
You reused old home partition and update did work well on .kde4 directory. Yes, this sounds like a possibility. I do reuse my old home partition as I have so much within it that I do not want to lose during an upgrade. Any suggestions on how I can repair/recover if this is the problem?
Your update did not work well and some library is either corrupt, or not correct version. Hmmm again I do not know what to do about this if indeed it is the

Seems like if my hard drive was dying I would be seeing other problems as well. This seems like a highly specific error, and is very repeatable. Usually that means that Plasma crashes on logout/shutdown and hence the changes aren't saved. It might make sense to not make too many changes at once, but rather make a few changes, restart Plasma, and see if the settings don't stick. Alternatively, I wonder if you might be making changes to one activity, but a different activity is loaded on startup. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Yes that is kinda what I am doing while I am trying to find a solution. I just make a few changes, like set the background and/or add just one widget, reboot, and see if the new configuration stuck. It doesn't. Alternatively, I wonder if you might be making changes to one activity, but a different activity is loaded on startup. I kinda wonder if there isn't something going on with activities as well. When I right click on the background and bring up the Activities setup, I use to see the various activities I had set up, when I was using openSuSE 12.2 (before I upgraded to 12.3) Now all I see is the ability to create a new activity, and not any of the old activities that I had previously set up. If the configuration for the activities setups are stored somewhere in my home directory then I wonder if there is some sort of incompatibility between an earlier version of these configuration files and the current one? My home directory is in a separate partition and I simply mount it so as to keep all the stuff I have stored there... Which is a LOT considering for example that I have a number of large Eclipse workspaces... :-D
