Hi. I have SUSE 8.2 pro, kmail 1.5.1, KDE 3.1.1, cups, remote lpd printer. and I cannot print from kmail. Kmail locks up with the formatting page and print cancel button showing and cannot be killed without exiting X. Other programs print ok. Any suggestions appreciated as I would like to print an email without cut and pasting the contents to a text document. Thanks, steve

When you say other programs, what do you mean? KMail uses kprinter mechanism as does all other kde programs, so if they work, kmail should also. But if you are using or testing with say OO or Moz or some other program not using the kprinter, then your comparison is not correct. You say CUPS is setup to print to a remote printer, so you know your connection to the printer is ok. I would first check the settings in the kprinter window to see if it is finding or going to that printer as well, don't just assume it does. Also, you might want to update your KDE files from SuSE to bring your kmail up to a new version. By other programs I mean say KWrite, KSpread.

All of my updates have been SuSE supplied, yes. Are you having trouble with all mails or just one that you have tried to print? It could be that the mail you are trying to print is corrupt in some way that Ghostscript can't handle it. Were the updates with YaST - YOU. I have found mirrors of suse rpms but these are not shown in YaST by default. I have cups with foomatic database and not cups with suse database. Would this make any difference. Problem seems to be with all emails steve

Steve, Could possibly be some mismatch stuff that is causing it, I am not sure, someone more experienced will have to join in to tell us. I try to use only SuSE prepared rpms. I compile several other programs, but system stuff like Ghostscript and cups I get SuSE stuff. You could test by installing your orginal stuff from your 8.2 discs. Steve, Similar setup (KDE 3.1.2, KMAIL 1.5.2). Printing from kmail causes it to crash on the "Printing...." dialogue. No rhyme or reason. I'm just waiting to receive 9.0 and seeing what happens before I try to fix the problem. Jethro

Yes, this has been happening here too for the last month - attempting to print from any KDE app crashes the app. OOo is Ok, so I haven't really looked into it yet, but I suspect some CUPS thing is missing. Print setup on 8.2 leaves something to be desired. -- Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - Meddalwedd Rydd yn Gymraeg

I posted this problem some time ago, glad to see I wasn't alone. I have 2 SUSE 8.2 pro installations. 1 has lpd printer and has been updated regularly with YAST - won't print but did at first install. 1 has local epson and no updates and prints fine. steve

Is your printer combined with a scanner at all? Had the same problem, printer only worked once. Installed the printer again through CUPS and everything works fine now. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

No. You're not alone. It's strange. I don't often print from Kmail so I'm not clear when or why it stopped working, but I am sure that it used to work. It isn't enough of an irritant to merit trying to fix it. Did you try wiping your printers and re-installing them? Jethro

When I select the one printer already set up, KControlCenter crashes! It is also missing the buttons, icons, etc for CUPS. Are you getting this too, Steve? -- Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - Meddalwedd Rydd yn Gymraeg

hey guys, With CUPS, usually the best way to add and adjust your printers is to open Konqueror and type in the url: localhost:631 That will take you to the CUPS server and let you play to your heart's content. Should be a bit easier to make changes and test as well. Lee -- --- KMail v1.5.4 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
