[opensuse-kde] M7 on USB stick - making, boot, installation, first steps
Making: All you need is: http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/ openSUSE-KDE4-LiveCD-i686-Build0271-Media.iso plus http://lizards.opensuse.org/2009/08/13/cliced-hybrids/ Boot: I had to change boot order in BIOS. + reasonably fast on 64 bit machine AMD Athlon 3500+ with 1GB RAM + desktop effects work + nice default theme Air openSUSE - wireless (BCM4318) doesn't work ssb/b43 driver are missing firmware - hal doesn't run Workaround: install fixed package from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Base:/System/openSUSE_Factory/ - knetworkmanager even after installation of new hal package doesn't work Systray icon doesn't have many options Manage Connections and Enable Wireless. How to turn off the thing ? - wired doesn't work after cable was plugged in Workaround: use YaST > Network Devices > Network Settings tab General to switch to ifup method (and if there is no Internet run 'rcnetwork restart') Installation: Not much to say - in other words, looks good as graphics and it works without glitch. First steps: Just as with LiveCD, pardon LiveUSB. Network is down, but somehow it picked up hal update from live system. Not sure for the rest, but zypper up didn't gave many updates. I haven't time to check logs, trying to find firmware for the wireless. - file associations are messed up again Firefox is trying to use GIMP to open .pdf file. Check is Okular installed. Firefox download manager is using Gwenview to open download folder. Dolphin is installed. Today I used Ubuntu for a while and it gave me idea to put new user glasses with M7. Looking for application to install, I have to go to: Main Menu > Computer to find Install Software. It would be good to have it in Favorites. It is not very often used later, but right after system installation I need it more then (crippled) Amarok and Digicam. I need it specially because I want working Amarok, so I have to install something. Favorites tab is meant to be changed per user needs. Now, how to explain new user how to add application to Favorites is another pair of shoes :) Right click gives me option to remove, but not to add, like almost any other widget. New guy has to wait until it perform right click on some of menu items in another tab, or somewhere in other parts of Main Menu to find Add To Favorites option. Quicklaunch widget has add icon option, so code exist. (more about Quicklaunch bugs tomorrow) I'll keep new user glasses for a while, as it may help to add small helpers around the desktop that will make using openSUSE first class experience. -- Regards, Rajko People of openSUSE editor. If you don´t have connection, you won´t be able to manage connections and wireless. I have the same wireless and probably we could have a similar ethernet also, so wired/wireless doesn´t work. The issue was fixed in NetworkManager 0.7.1-52.1 and after install it, when connection started working i was able to manage connections and wireless. But it doesn´t work again in M7. It's a kde service, so you can turn it off in systemsettings. For me it did not connect either, yet updating to KDE4:Factory helped, so M7 was apparently just a bad snapshot. I need more details on how it doesn't work.
How to turn off the thing ?
To quit it, open Manage Connections, uncheck "Show icon in tray", Ok. Will -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
