Hi Rich,
it seems your KDE 3.1 installation still contains old files from previous versions of KDE.
Try the following:
init 3;
ps -ef | grep kde | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9
rpm -ivh

Thanks Vadym, I followed your instructions and there was some improvement. At least YaST loads in a gui now - since the update I've had to use the console version. However, the error messages are still there in KControl. These files (the libkcm_XXX.la) just don't get installed. Any idea which package has them? Missing module files are: libkcm_socks.la libkcm_newsticker.la libkcm_lanbrowser.la libkcm_konq.la libkcm_kamera.la libkcm_midi.la libkcm_kcmkxmirpcd.la libkcm_konqhtml.la libkcm_nsplugin.la libkcm_alarmdaemonctrl.la Thanks immensely for your help so far. One other thing I had forgotten to mention: do not install the kde2-compat*.rpm packages - unless you really need to. This could be the reason for an old kcontrol hanging around. Try uninstalling these kde2 compatibility packages (rpm -e kde2-compat kde2-compat-devel), and then reinstall KDE 3.1. Also, check your path to make sure that /opt/kde3/bin is before /opt/kde2/bin and /opt/kde. Regards, Vadym Richard Bos wrote:

Ok tried it again last night but unfortunately without success. Steps: * From runlevel 3 I shut down all KDE related processes using Vadyms advice. ie: pe -ef | grep kde | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9 * ls *.rpm | xargs rpm -qp --queryformat "%{NAME}\n" | xargs rpm -e --allmatches I ran this from the KDE rpms download directories to remove all the previously installed packages that I was about to reinstall * installed kdebase.rpm (the kde2 package) first * installed all base rpms - except for kde2-compat and kde3base-extras (the latter gave conflicts with kde3base because of a few theme files) - and it ran through ok even without the "--nodeps" flag * installed all application rpms with --nodeps * installed all development rpms with --nodeps (twice) * installed applications again using --nodeps since it failed here and there due to missing third party packages (I can follow that up later when I actually need those apps). As far as I could tell the failed packages did not include important packages such as knetwork (since Kmail is there) and the others that we mentioned previously. Results: KDE starts as before, Kmail and YaST etc all work fine but I still get the same old error messages when I try to open particular modules in Control Center. Still claims that libkcm_konq.la (among others that I listed previously) is not found in paths. I checked, and libkcm_konq.la does exist now on the HD (/opt/kde2/lib/kde2) but just doesn't seem to get found. After all that it was getting late and I had to get some beauty sleep ;-) (believe me I need it!!) So any ideas what to try next? I might try the kde2-compat package and see what that does but any further suggestions would be much appreciated. Regards Richard On Monday 03 March 2003 20:01, Richard Andrews wrote:
