[opensuse-kde] problem with viewing videos
I am still using 11.0. For some reason, upgrades don't work on this box. Another problem for another day. Anyway I upgraded firefox from 3.5 which was in the repo to 16.0.2. I did it from their site, not a suse rpm, because there is none for 11.0 anymore. I installed firefox at /usr/bin/firefox /usr/lib/firefox /usr/bin/X11/firefox Then I could not see videos. It told me to upgrade flash so I did, from the site given in the error message. It is installed at /usr/bin/flashplayer /usr/bin/X11/flashplayer and /usr/lib/flash-plugin KDE is 3.5.9 I still get the message that I need to upgrade flash and of course, can't see any video such as youtube. Video has been a problem. Firefox has shown them more consistently than Konqi. I may have conflicting or mixed up plugins and I really don't have all the codecs I should. How can I straighten all this out so I can see youtube etc? First, be more considerate of others and provide links to your volumous uploads so they do not have to pay for *your* information. Second, dl a "live-cd" and see if your computer will handle later distro versions. If so, upgrade your distro. If not, you have problems which might require reinstalling 11.0 from the unsupported archives. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Please pardon my ungracious cross-posting. I didn't notice the post I answered *was* cross-posted. I assume you mean OS upgrades, as 11.0 is well beyond EOL.

Still true (for me) in openSUSE12.1

Unfortunately, the best suggestion I can give you is to try Opera. Opera seems to work where no other browser will. (Chrome / Chromium, come in a reasonable second but you may have trouble finding versions which will work w/ openSUSE 11) http://www.opera.com/browser/download/ Having said that, I still use Firefox 3.6 (?) in SuSE12.7 and most videos work when using the current flash plugins. (Vimeo seems problematic) Here is one repo which may be useful. Mozilla legacy, 11.1 seems to be as far back as they go (I use firefox from the 11.4 repo on openSuSE 12.1, so the 11.1 repo may be of use to you if you wish to revert to an older version of firefox. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla:/legacy/openSUSE_11.1/ Chromiums oldest repo is 11.4, so not likely to be of use to you. You do not say why your system fails to upgrade. If the system has enough horsepower (possibly as little as 2 GB ram on the physical host), you could try running firefox on a newer OS in virtualbox fullscreen. Just a thought. Having said all of this, figuring out why upgrades to a newer OS fail seems like the best long term solution, plus, it's a solution where you may be able to find more help.
