That can also be caused by a misconfigured and/or not detected sound card. I've experienced the same while updating my sound drivers w/ the ALSA repos, which caused KMIx not to autoload, since there were some errors listed.

I think it is useful to have the volume control in the tray. It would help new users (e.g. from Vista or GNOME) to easily be able find where to adjust the volume.

In theory it should auto start, unless theres some sort of bug in M8 not related to sound card detection/configuration.
