Problem with KStars and coordinate systems; non-astronomers too help please
Does anyone else see the following bug on KStars 1.20 on KDE 3.5? With Settings > Configure KStars > Guides > Coordinate Grid switched on, Try changing the coordinate system by View > Equatorial Coordinates and View > Horizontal Coordinates. It does not work. Do you see this too? For those not into astronomy, you probably don't have KStars installed, but if you do, please test whether it works or not. The test is: if the grid has its pole at the star labeled Polaris in both coordinate system then the bug exist. Expected behaviour: Only when you select Equatorial Coordinates must the pole of the grid be near Polaris. When you select Horizontal Coordinates the pole of the grid must be at the zenith (a different point from Polaris except at the North Pole). I see another bug, that the settings are not immediately implemented even when Apply or OK is hit. Only when a cursor movement or other change causes a redraw of the chart are they implemented. For example, try Settings > Configure KStars > Solar System > Select None and Apply, and check whether you still see the sun and other planets or not. (Try Ctrl+F > Sun and it will center on the sun.) -- Penguin #395953 resides at http://samvit.org subsisting on SUSE Linux 10.0 with KDE 3.5

Try changing the coordinate system by View > Equatorial Coordinates and View > Horizontal Coordinates. It does not work. Do you see this too?
there's a difference between the VIEWMODE and the grid that gets plotted on the map. <SPACE> toggles between equatorial and azimutal VIEWMODE but the grid in the map is ALWAYS a RA/DEC grid.

That seems to be a true bug, settings changes dont force a redraw... have you filed it on the kde bugtracker? bye, MH

It says "horizontal coordinates". I wonder - how can I even get an idea of the horizontal coordinates without an altaz grid? It is meaningless to say that you provide a "view in horizontal coordinates" without providing an altaz grid. All other astronomy applications which I know, namely Stellarium and HNSky show the appropriate grid as specified.
