[opensuse-kde] Update from KDE 4 to "KDE 5" or Plasma 5 or Frameworks 5 or whatever
Hi, I'm still trying to find concise instructions on how to migrate from KDE 4 to whatever combination of plasma, apps and framework adds up to "the version that cometh after KDE 4" (on openSUSE 13.2) Am I right in assuming that I should _disable_ the KDE:Extras repository, add KDE:Frameworks5 and KDE:Applications, replace kde4-session with plasma5- session and then run a zypper dup? Do i backup and clean out some folders in ~? I mean, it can't seriously mean "reinstall your PC and delete your home directory"... My suggestion would be: - disable KDE:Extra - add KDE:Frameworks5 - do "zypper dup --from <your KDE:Frameworks5 repo name>": it should replace / obsolete all the packages needed (if it doesn't, it's a bug) - add KDE:Applications - Repeat the dup mantra (with --from now pointing to the Applications repo name) As for backups, KF5 based apps will, if possible, migrate non-destructively (read: your old config is untouched) your configuration to the new config folders (which are ~/.config for configuration files, and ~/.local/share for data). Existing kdelibs 4.x applications will keep on using .kde4. An exception to the rule is Plasma itself, which will need new configuration from scratch (it'll start from a blank state). Prior to starting, ensure you have a video card that's *at least* capable of OpenGL 2. Plasma (or rather, the libraries it has been built upon) will not run if your driver doesn't support at least OpenGL 2. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: A29D259B

Now THAT is the kind of instrutions I was hoping to find. Thanks!! Should I update QT5 as well? And as far as openGL goes, a GTX760 and the latest nvidia binary driver should be good enough, hm? ...but... how about a nvidia optimus on my laptop where the desktop is driven by an intel integrated controller...? Might be a good idea, however I'm not sure the Qt version these repos have been linked against (I'm at work, so I can't check that in detail, unfortunately).

NVIDIA has some annoyances with konsole (like in the early 4.x days) IIRC but more or less should be fine.

Both drivers have at least openGL 3 compliance. There shouldn't be a problem. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: A29D259B

Thanks man! that is exactly the kind of instructions I was looking for, why is that not on the wiki... ...does zypper have transactions like yum in RHEL does? Would be good now... i did it by switching from 13.2 to tumbleweed. more info: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Tumbleweed_installation https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_repositories in principle: first set up the openSUSE repos for Tumbleweed (for simplification, disable all the extra repos for this stage) then zypper dup. when everything is up and running again, you can add these repos for latest KDE apps, Plasma 5 and Frameworks 5: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks5/openSUSE_Factory http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Applications/openSUSE_Factory... http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_Tumbleweed -- Best Regards | Liebe Grüße | Cordialement | Cordiali Saluti | *Rainer Klier* Research & Development SIGNificant Signature Solutions GmbH -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
