[opensuse-kde] [warning] BTRFS + KDE desktop instabilities
Hi all, just a little heads up for (at least) 13.2 users. It appears that using btrfs as root fs (well, for /var/tmp/ fs) can cause problem with KSharedDataCache (i.e. plasma cache, etc) in form of crashes. It is reported upstream as https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340657 It is yet unclear where the bug lies, as there are similar problems reported for kernels 3.16.x - 3.17.1 on btrfs mailing list. If you are using btrfs for root, and can reproduce the issue with 3.17.2 or newer, or you cannot reproduce after updating kernel to 3.17.2, please follow up on the bug report. Thanks! Cheers, Hrvoje
Thanks for the heads up. During installation /home is created using XFS. It seems a possible work-around would be to move /var/tmp to /home and create a symlink. --- pablo on my mobile device -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

No idea about symlinks, but I've been using bind in fstab to move both /var and /tmp under /home, that worked fine. -- Regards, Stas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

In UNIX/Linux, there are many ways to solve the problem. :) I had to comment out the entry in /etc/fstab for /var/tmp too. Now /var/tmp is in my /home, which I had planned on doing anyway (more space) and I'm using XFS. Hmmm. I wonder if this is related to the issues I have on 13.1with zypper updates failing because /var is on a read-only file system(!!!). It seems / gets corrupted and then gets remounted ro - trouble is, you can't fix it without booting from a rescue disk (at least, I assume that is the way to fix it - I haven't tried yet).

Thanks. Maybe anyone has actual btrfs-related error message? I had to use 'clear_cache' mount option with external ssd drive because free space cache was broken too often. Maybe that can be fast and dirty solution to this issue as well? -- Regards, Stas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Look like certain options have to be disabled on /var/tmp/ If you've a plain stock 13.2 install for example /var/lib/pgsql as a subvolume with no-cow /me sorry away from any 13.2 at the moment. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Board, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot

Takashi has prepared* some fixes at home:tiwai:os13.2-ckt1, so if someone experiencing the crashes could test those kernel packages, that would be great.. * https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=905832#c5 Cheers, Hrvoje
