I am using SuSE 8.0 Professinal with KDE 3.0. Updated my system using YOU a few days ago. I installed mplayer from sources and found that the system would refuse to play the movies with sound. I had to fix it by disabling aRTS in the control panel. Now that aRTS is disabled (by disabling the sound server) mplayer is happy but xmms is mad now. XMMS displays an error message that says Please check that: 1. You have the correct output plugin selected. 2. No other programs is blokcing the soundcard 3. Your soundcar is configure properly Question: How do I make mplayer and xmms happy at the same time?

Two options: if you want to run mplayer as you do now with arts disabled, you have to change the output plugin in xmms. In preferences select the proper plugin for the sound system you're using (alsa is suse's default). Or, if artsd is running, you can run mplayer with artsdsp. artsdsp mplayer will redirect the sound output from mplayer to the arts daemon. regards Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

This may or may not answer your question but I found that by updating (or even installing some applications) the sound volume gets reset to a very low level. Simply raise the volume control and you're back in business. Cheers.
