How to install the KDE 3.1 ?
Hallo Do any one have any advice on installing the KDE rpm's ? Previously I have only installed single stand alone packages not interfering with earlier installations. (running suse 8.0) Now, there is no "meta-rpm" ? If it was it would be a YOU facility - right ? So how do one proceed with the rpms supplied by suse ? Do I install one after the another starting from the bottom (earliest first) with the KDE "basispaketen" and then onwards in the same manner with the "KDE Applikationen" ? Is the order of any importance ? Is there any need to halt in the process and make some diagnostics or is it supposed to work anyway ? Will it work to install the rpm's while the KDE 3.0.5 is up an running ? Seems like a risky business though. Any way back (besides the backups) ? Will it be possible to get back by reinstalling the packages supplied on the suse8.0 installation cd's ? In that case, should I remove the installed rpm's (rpm -e) before returning to the safe harbour of the suse installation cd's ? I have searched the kde.org but not found any reassuring documentation to help me. Any suselogicians out there ? I would apreciate any advice on these matters. Thank's

The README in the directory at ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.1/SuSE/kde/ (a directory you passed through to download the rpm's) states # # KDE 3.1 for SuSE distribution # An upgrade will usually work with with these two commands: rpm -Uvh libart_lgpl*rpm rpm -Fvh *rpm That said, I ran into a couple of conflict problems so removed the offending rpm's (after noting their names and deciding I wouldn't miss them) with the command rpm -e "name of package" for example if the error said there was a conflict with someUnnededPackage-4.2-81.rpm then I used the command rpm -e someUnnededPackage-4.2-81 note that you do not want to include the .rpm extension. have fun -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
Hi, the correct dir is : ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.1/SuSE/ix86 then select the subdir for your Rel ie: 8.1 or 7.3 or whatever PeterB On Friday 31 January 2003 10:40 am, David Herman wrote:

A wonderful site! They accept the text-mode ftp client: ftp -ai ftp.kde.org and then cd down the tree, and they can support around 280KB a second, or whatever my provider can handle. Not only is SuSE.de abominably slow (their right), they do not propagate that subdirectory to the mirrors. -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

A little cut and paste error on my part, sorry. I was trying to point to the directory that contained the README ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.1/SuSE/ See ya -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
