Since installing 10.1 (KDE 3.1 no add-ons or extras) the device icons do not appear on my desktop (both as root or user) until I mount a device in addition to swap & \ (eg. mount /dev/hdd1 /media/hdd1) Making changes to device icon display in Control Center or Configure Desktop has no affect. I see the same thing on the 3 boxes I have installed 10.1 on. Is anyone else experiencing this issue and if so, is there a solution? TIA Dave

Dave ============= Dave, All of your device, drive icons are contained in the My Computer icon on your desktop. Since everything is mounted automatically now, I guess someone thought it easier and cleaner to contain them all in one place. Things like all those drive icons sitting on the desktop tends to scare Windows users coming over. :-)

IMNSHO the "sweet" little name "My Computer" is silly and infantile terminology, but the Windows kiddies like so what the.....

Not everything is mounted automatically, I have a permanent third drive (hhd1 & hdd2) which I have (and want) to mount manually.

OK, so the KDE control center "show device icons" is just a bit of dross left over from the good old Linux days ;-) Which doesn't explain why the icons automagically appear when I mount one of the third drive partitions, load a CD/DVD or plug in a usb block device.

Yep! that would be like showing a driver the engine of his car :-))

If Linux/KDE is to become a Windows clone, maybe I should give it up and start contributing towards BG's "charitable" trusts ;-) Better stop now before the list OT police get on my case. Regards Dave
