I made no changes at all to the standard KDEPIM3 setup - does this mean I used what kind of setup?
That does not mean anything. KMail allowed to choose for each folder whether it should be stored in maildir (each message in a separate file) or mbox (all messages of a folder in one large file) format. IIIRC the default was maildir though, so a maildir resource should be fine. (though in my automatically migrated kmail setup, the "saved-messages" and "sent-mail" folders are in mbox format, I don't think I ever set that explicitly...) Actually, I would suggest to just add a new resource (in *addition* to the existing "Local Folders" one), and point it to the old location. Go into "Configure KMail"->Accounts->Receiving, click on "Add", choose "Maildir" or "KMail Maildir" (the latter is preferable if you are not sure whether you used mbox as well or not), and in the appearing config dialog choose the folder on the hard disk. You can then copy or move the mail from the one to the other if you prefer, and then even delete the newly created resource afterwards if you want. Or just continue to use the old folder. Alternatively, you could also just reconfigure the existing "Local Folders" resource to point to the old location (select it in the Accounts settings and click on "Edit" instead of "Add"), but then you'll lose possibly existing mails in the new location of course (and it wouldn't work with mbox folders as mentioned). But you can have as many mail resources as you want/need anyway, so I'd probably prefer the first way.
