I would try to use at least the same ratio image so the scale/cropped doesn't change its ratio to or am I completely dumb ?
Yes I've background image at the same size (1280x1024) in sddm and desktop but not in the middle step. Removing the splash screen, things are a better but transition from sddm and Plasma desktop is not smooth as in Kde4.

I've submitted a bug report on Sept.26th. See: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=947682 I requested that it should halt and replace it with a fade in to desktop. Cheers!
