Showing network activity icon

Hi, I am pretty new to Linux and Suse Linux in particular. On windows, I am able to open "Local Area Connection Properties" and click off "Show icon in notification area when connected". This gives me a little icon by the clock that shows when there is activity between my machine and the network." How do I get the same thing on Suse? Thanks for your help, Yaakov.
