As a workaround I'd suggest to untick "close after...." and keep "close when last application stops using".
Martin Schlander suggested the other way round. Anyway, I will test both settings next weekend and report my findings here.
Here are the results: I was travelling the same route twice, on Friday I tried Martin's suggestion (keep "close after...." and untick "close when last application stops using") today Luca's (the other way round). Both solutions obviously worked. I did not observe those annoying passphrase pop-ups, although UMTS connection was interrupted several times. I, for myself, can live with that solution, although I do not completely understand, what is going on. I have never been playing around with those settings, but stick to the defaults of my installation. By the way, when I applied the mentioned changes to the settings, I was asked for my login password (not root, not the wallet passphrase, either), what seems weird to me because changes of KDE user mode settings are usually applied without extra authentication.
