That only means they won't be sorted. But you still cannot sort them manually...

In comment#5 the upstream developer states that when it "acts as a widget on top of the desktop surface", it: "Doesn't allow free icon positioning (pretty sure Plasma 4 didn't either) since it's silly and also because it allows certain speed optimizations not possible with free icon positioning (widgets often show folders with more files than the desktop would)."
Plasma 4 actually did allow free positioning, but anyway. This is on purpose (and not just since Plasma 5.6), and I'm not aware of any plans to change that either.

On purpose??? KDE4 had become nice and stable in openSUSE 13.2, while the features in Plasma 5 had turned into a regression. If I new how to program I would have introduced a patch. Most unfortunate.
