Login screen background picture

I just upgraded to KDE 3.4 via apt. Upon restarting X, my background picture changed to the KDE default. No matter what I try, I can't change it. I can change everything else about the login screen, but not the background picture. Any ideas? Also, how do I get rid of the window section which shows the syslog? Thanks in advance.
