There is no Yes/No question -- at least not for Matroska files. A "Checking for software to install" window with progress bar opens immediately and then runs VLC nonetheless.
If you like VLC better than mplayer, make it the default in the KDE settings, I think that should work.
It is default already. Don't you think I know which applications I've set as default?
You should contribute in the thread (on this ML no less!) discussing this if you were experiencing issues,

I didn't "just" call it buggy. I called it buggy and gave an error description which is still as much of a description I can give, because there is no error message or anything. I tried to record this behavior, but recordmydesktop does not really function when 5 or so mplayer processes along with zypper hog the CPU completely.
