Might work for you, but it would be pretty sucky for a 133 DPI user, and terrible for a 200 DPI user. Someone who isn't using a display that is in fact near 96 DPI at a minimum should never be given such advice.
Why was the calendar plasmoid working in openSUSE 11.4 but not in 12.1? The guys at bugs.kde.org have marked it fixed and resolved. Refer to: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=277433 However, I'm running 4.7.4 "release 11" and it's still broken. I'll be logging in to bugzilla to submit a bug report.
