The kdesu does work to start the first program, Kornqueror. This is the default setup for SuSE. What does not work in 8.1 that did work in 7.2 is right clicking on a file and selecting open with Kwrite. Yes I could find a way to do this with the command line, but I try to stay away from the command line, I'm a GUI person. Right now I think there is a path issue with root. How do I get the root path to include the directories where the applications are? Thanks, Stan Green On Thursday 08 May 2003 11:20 pm, O'Smith wrote:

After a year with SuSE 7.2 Pro, I have just SuSE 8.1 Pro. I have one issue with the new install.
When I start kfmclient with kdeus, I cannot right click on a file and open with kwrite. I get the error: KDEInit could not launch 'kwrite'. If I do an su from a commad line, I get: command not found. If a do a su -m, I can launch kwrite, but not programs that are in /sbin. I think there might be a path issue, but I cannot seem to find where to correct this.
Now this all worked fine in 7.2, so I know it can be done. How do I fix this in 8.1?

Stan, Sounds like you are using the wrong commands to open gui programs as root. As long as I can remember, if you wanted to start kwrite as root, from a shell, then you need to log in with "sux" for that. I haven't used su -m, but have su and su -, but never used those to open a gui program.
While kdesu should allow you to start a program as root, that program should be root after that. I use kdesu from a shell many times to give me a root file manager or kwrite.
