Thanks for the advice here, it is appreciated. Presently I am in a steep learning curve, and while I am aware of the need to use root selectively, I am still groping my way.
Just remember - su and sux are your friends. :-) They are quite simple to use, so don't be scared to give it a try rather than running X as root; which, again, is not reccomended. There's also sudo that you may want to look into later (unlike su and sux, it requires configuration). -- "He's just a politician trying to save both his faces ..."
