kmail - mbox or maildir - which format is better?

Hi, kmail gives you the choice to set the mailbox format to mbox or maildir. I understand that mbox is one single file with all messages for a folder in it and mailir is one file for each message in a directory (for each folder). But what are the pros and cons for each format, which one is better or better for what? Thanks, Matt
