Strange. The automatic spell checking is usually right below Spellcheck in Tools menu, like it is in Kate. I didn't came on idea to browse other menus to look for it. Somehow it is not really intuitive to look for spell check option in Options menu. It is option in the spell check tool, but it is also a tool by itself, so changing location wasn't necessary. Someone was carried away in the effort to fix drop down menus.
You can switch the language, provided you have installed more than one language, in the dropdown menu item Settings; click on Spellchecker...
I'd guess his problem is the same as mine: Spell check does not work at all in all KDE applications.
As Patrick said it worked in Kate and Kwrite. It didn't in the Konqueror. I didn't check other. It is very good that it started working in Konqueror without application restart. In KMail I got to turn it off and on in Options menu to start.
Did you install your language using the Yast Software manager. Drop down: View item Languages or search for aspell and install your language. And did you enable spellchecking in systemsettings; top section item Locale?
Not before, but I did now, and spellchecker works. Now I can turn it on or off in KMail. The option in System Settings acts more like "Enable automatic spell check globally" then like "Automatic spell check enabled by default", at least for KMail. Bug or feature? To me it is more a bug. Also, spell check not enabled by default is not a good thing. Whoever came on such idea is probably annoyed with all that red underscores when editing program source, but for the majority that is must have, so asking for special procedure to have it is a bit awkward.
