Using openSUSE 11.1 (i686, 32-bit)
I have just upgraded to KDE 4.3.1 (Rel 163) a couple of days back. On enabling the desktop folder view [Pict 1], I am getting the following errors:
- Any folder on the desktop opens with Gwenview on clicking it (should open w/ Dolphin or Konqueror, by default)
- Both, Konqueror & Dolphin show all the application files as files with the [.dektop] extension. [Pict 2]
- On trying to run any application on the desktop, it gives an error message, which shows the file as a <.desktop> file and says that the file should be executable to run (checking properties of the file, all are executable, as they are applications). This happens with all apps on desktop: Firefox, OpenOffice.org Starter, etc. (Images [3], [4] - these are for Firefox, but happens with any app/shortcut on the desktop). However, the apps can be run from the Kicker Menu.
Any suggestions to fix the problem, because in all other respects, KDE 4.3.1 seems stable and functional.
Thnks,
Jay
New in 4.3. I have application icon marked with "!", but I run Factory and Oxygen desktop theme, right now. There could be different icons for different themes, or distros.
It happens only on first start, and if you cancel that it will happen again. Once you say that is OK to run that application, the icon will change and you will never see that again.
I have the same in both Dolphin and Konqueror. Click on item with .desktop suffix will start application. But I recall that there was problem after update from 4.2 to 4.3, where some icons had text under them, but instead of application icon generic icon presenting piece of paper with question mark on it, used for items that system can't recognize. I'm not sure was there any with correct application icon that didn't start. It is possible. I didn't analyze a lot why, just deleted bad items and created new. My guess was that internal file format for .desktop files had changed from 4.2 to 4.3, or system performed strict syntax check, or for some reason system couldn't convert old icons to new format, and that discarded some previously created desktop icons (.desktop files).
And that was what I got trying to start invalid items. Delete and create new is probably the fastest way to correct the problem. -- Regards, Rajko http://news.opensuse.org/category/people-of-opensuse/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
