Lol, most assuredly Gnome is installed. I can start it from tty term. Like I said, it's about getting KDM to make it available for login in init 5 via the gui.
Cheers, Curtis.
If I recall the change was made early in the 9.x series, I'm runnung 9.2 w/kde3.5.
The following all assumes that kdm is being used as session manager.
My recollection is that windowmanagers are somewhat automatically recognized by kdm as long as there is a proper *.desktop file in /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/
If I am remembering correctly then you should only need to check for the file /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop Assuming that it exists, open the file w/ kwrite and make sure the information looks correct.
Here is a snip from my working /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop file ----------snip--------------
[Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=XSession Exec=gnome-session TryExec=gnome-session Name=GNOME
----------snip-------------
If there is no /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop then you can use one of the other *.desktop files as a template
Hope this helps
Ya, I fugured that out - the part about the auto-recognize for the *.desktop files. I checked and indeed the gnome.desktop was there and config as it is in your above example. Then I discover the synaptic had removed the gnome-sessions package. So I went to update it (via red-carpet and it complained about and x11 file not meeting dependencies and there was no available package to fulfill this requirement. I will have to try to fix this. Pbone is usually a fair place to start when I'm confronted by these issues. Thanks for clarifying this issue all the same. Happy New Year. Curtis.
