[opensuse-kde3] KDE3 & Firefox 6 on 11.4/i586

I recently installed 11.4 on my Thinkpad A22p(P3/1Ghz/512MB/ATI Rage 128Mobility-16MB). I installed KDE3 and updated Firefox to v6 through the Mozilla repo(which begs the question of what they are doing with v5.x in the main repo since Mozilla claims v6 is the security update......) Anyway, I've had issues with the menu bar, Tabs and the URL bar and the Search bar. The tabs will disappear and take the menu bar with them, and sometimes when I am typing in the URL and Search bars, the text will dissappear.... I had to use my 11.0 xorg.conf because 11.4 couldn't configure the display properly......And they said we didn't need SaX2......... I didn't notice this running LXDE when I first installed it, but I can't remember if I've use LXDE since I got KDE3 running. Has anyone else seen this? Probably just a question of timing and documentation since Firefox went to its short release intervals.
Exit FF and delete *.mfasl from your FF profile directory and try again. If that doesn't do it, try switching off tabs on top in the view menu. If you'd rather FF to look more like it did in v3.x, you might wish to try the extension status-4-evar, which also may make your problem go away. Another possible workaround might be installing MozillaFirefox-branding-upstream.

SaX3 is in the works for 12.1. Most people won't need it, but when you do you do.

I can't remember trying LXDE in a couple of years.
Has anyone else seen this?
Not me, but the complexities resulting from extensions aren't really testable. UI corruption seems to me virtually always caused by those .mfasl files corrupted after installing updates. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." It seems that sometimes devs think that if it works for 90% of the people, then it's good to go. When it comes to screen setup, Linux has it's issues. Everything else worked fine out of the box. I have no idea how to do that. I've never had to.

I'm using the exact same config on my 11.0 install on this machine(other than AdBlock Plus, which I have yet to install in 11.4.

Yep. Didn't change it. Ilya's suggestion to stop using the Qt theme fixed it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

It's a standard troubleshooting technique, doc'd everywhere you can find competent online Mozilla help, such as via the default Firefox personal/bookmarks toolbar link "Mozillazine". -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." This issue does not happen when I am in LXDE. Only when I am in KDE3........ Any ideas? It seems to have gotten worse. The tabs basically disappear all the time now. Sometimes they will show back up if I hover over them, sometimes they wont. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

This may be because you use the gtk-qt-engine. Go to GTK settings in Control Center and uncheck the "use KDE style in GTK applications" checkbox. Choose another GTK style from the list (any other than Qt).

Larry, I customized my toolbar as soon as FF 4X came out. That may have saved me in the upgrades from 4->5 and 5->6, because I haven't had any issues with tabs or the url/search bar.

11.4 and 11.0 use different xorg schemes. The new 11.4 setup is a rules based config similar to the udev setup. Instead of having a single: /etc/X11/xorg.conf you now have xorg.conf broken up into separate files under: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d All of the familiar section for xorg.conf are there, they are just separated into the various files: 09:19 alchemy:/etc/X11> l xorg.conf.d/ total 44 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 25 20:39 . drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 Aug 28 20:41 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1099 Aug 25 10:14 10-evdev.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3602 Jul 11 05:47 11-mouse.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 242 Mar 28 20:44 50-device.conf.rpmsave -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 242 Mar 10 17:04 50-device.conf.sav -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 171 Mar 28 20:44 50-device.conf.xaa -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 426 Mar 16 00:34 50-synaptics.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 115 Jul 11 05:47 50-vmmouse.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 891 Jul 11 05:47 50-wacom.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 107 Mar 9 02:27 90-keytable.conf Since you have an ATI based box, you may want to try configuring the 50-devices.conf.xaa file to disable dri. eg: 09:19 alchemy:/etc/X11> cat xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf.xaa Section "Module" Disable "dri" Disable "dri2" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Driver "radeonhd" Option "AccelMethod" "xaa" EndSection Performance on my Radeon X1250 based laptop has never been better with the open-source driver. Really close to the old proprietary driver performance.
There have been huge xorg fixes put in place under the following bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678264 You may just need a tweak or two to your xorg.conf.d files to get it running properly. Don't forget to change your xorg.conf file name to something else (eg. xorg.conf.sav) so you are not overriding the settings in xorg.conf.d/... when you test. -- David C. Copying my 11.0 conf file worked fine. DRI works and I get aroung 40fps in Penguin Planet Racer installed from an 11.1 rpm(Extreme Tux Racer got about 5-7). Only other display issue I've seen is that Neverball locks up the X system completely when started. However, it will shut down once you hold the power button for about 3 seconds, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I don't mess with games or 3D stuff much, so as long as the 2D works, I'm good.

I can't use the Radeon driver. The Rage128 is older. It uses the r128 module. I did notice the Xorg is pulling support for the older chips for DRi(including the r128)...........
After I switched from using Qt for Gtk, it's been fine. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org
