[opensuse-kde3] Can't start KDE3 11.3
Just installed 11.3 on a spare drive. Installed LXDM as the DE so that no KDE4 stuff would be installed. Went in and added KDE3. Now I can't log into it. I even started kdm from init 3 and it doesn't show kde3. Any ideas? Why do you think you installed KDE3? Did you add the KDE:KDE3 repository? Which packages did you install? To have KDE3 option in KDM you have to install kdebase3-session package. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Yep
To have KDE3 option in KDM you have to install kdebase3-session package.
Installed all of kde3 I wanted. Will have to check on that one, but I'm sure I installed it. Will have to reboot to check. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org
Ok. Didn't have kdebase3-session installed. fixed. Now, I have to start kdm from the command line. Anyone remember how to set that up? Can't configure my screens. without SaX2 I'm stuck. I have a 19" CRT(1024x768) and a 21.5" LCD(1920x1080) spread over both with 11.0. Now it clones both in 1024x768. If I go to configure desktop it changes the display to 1280x1024 on both and won't let me configure anything...... kdetv won't work with my wintv card either. Guess I'll add KDE4 and see what happens...... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

In Yast. In /etc/sysconfig editor go to /Desktop/DISPLAYMANAGER and set it to kdm3

Dont know what to advise. I have an Nvidia card and the resolution is set up in the Nvidia config utility.

Did you miss all the many threads during 11.3 development and since describing all the trouble caused by so-called automatic X configuration in 11.3, and the retirement of SaX2? Multi display configuration in 11.3 is totally unfriendly, and little better for any for whom automatic is fiction. Did you not consider 11.2, which still has SaX2, and lacks the fallout from the betaware called KMS, and its deps, on which 11.3 is built?

Yes. The point was to test to see how it would run under 11.3. 11.2 is known. If we want to see KDE3 continue, we need to find the problems in the current system. Next time I will do a text mode install and see what happens. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

The problems to which I referred are not about DTEs. They're about kernel and Xorg generally. Doesn't matter much which DTE you run when the foundation on which it depends is buggy betaware. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
