[opensuse-kde3] HAL support removed from kdebase3 in Factory, need feedback

Kirill can you please make feedback about the recent update to Factory's KDE3 repository? Is it OK now with HAL support removed? Do all expected functions work? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Ilya, FYI. i originally installed 12.1m3_x86/kde3 (from factory) onto a partition, to test. Generally, I refrained from updating. Today I updated from KDE3 factory, about 853 packages (incl the main 12.1 repos -- to 12.1m5, I assume). Personal Settings on the menu is now working fine (no blank left side). System Setting module, that I installed to work around Personal Settings not working, still is not showing the kcmgtk.desktop module in "Appearance". I think I had this before in 11.3 or 4 testing, but can't remember what we did to get it to show. No matter: I can delete System Settings now that Personal Settings works. Inserting CDs and DVDs into a burner works --- KDE throws up the normal "what do you want me to do?" dialogue box, and Kb3 recognizes the content of the drives, which it didn't before. However, I still have HAL installed; should I delete it? Clicking on the desktop "My Computer" icon still produces a KDE dialogue box that asks me to select what program I want to run. IOW, it doesn't work. Konquerer file manager also borks out if I key in sysinfo:/. Having only a wired ethernet connection, I don't use (nor want to use, given its infamy) the Network Manager program. That's all for now. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Really? Did you add the Hidden.directory line? And what package desktop-data-openSUSE is installed?

Yes. Try to remove it.

It will not work without hal. The icon will be removed from the desktop. But I wonder why it does not work with hal installed. Maybe the problem is with the policies.
Konquerer file manager also borks out if I key in sysinfo:/.

Oops, you are right; I did make the Hidden.directory mod to the xml file a while ago. But the system update today installed/upgraded desktop-data-openSUSE to 11.4-16.3 from repo-oss (according to the zypper log file), and it still worked afterwards; in other words, the update did not change the previously modified xml file. Mea Culpa.
However, I still have HAL installed; should I delete it?
Yes. Try to remove it.
Not a whole lot of fun, that one. Taking HAL out also takes out (I allowed): - kdebase3_SuSE-11.3-22.2.i586 - kdebase3_SuSE-lang-11.3-22.2.noarch - kde3-kio-sysinfo-11.3-??.11.i586 After logging out & back in, the panel is effectively blank (even minimized windows aren't shown, no menu button, systray, kmix gone, etc), desktop icons don't have text below them, and firefox 6 acted a bit strange at times, including no edit-search function. That's to start with. I didn't go further. For the record, the official message (3 exactly the same) after login but just before the desktop loaded, leading to the blank stuff everywhere, was: "KDE Panel - applet could not be loaded". Getting back HAL and the three modules above that were deleted was fun, since you really have to search for them ... they aren't in factory, it seems. Anyway, I've restored them and everything is back. If this is the effect of HAL being removed in 12.1, KDE 3 on that version is not looking good, is it? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

I'm very sorry, but it isn't OK. Removable media doesn't appear. And I don't see NFS mount points. -- WBR Kyrill -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Did you actually remove hal from your system and update kdebase3 package? Also check if process named devmon-automounter is running. Does the removable media appear in the /media folder after insertion? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

OK, went back in to the 12.1m3>m5_x86/kde3 test partition, which had been restored to workable status (putting back in HAL, kdebase3_SuSe stuff, and kde3-kio_sysinfo last evening -- see previous message). Checked that automounting DVDs was fine and showing up in /media. All OK. That's the baseline. FYI, devmon-automounter IS already installed in /opt/kde3/bin via the kdebase3-workspace-3.5.10.1-184.5 package, the most up to date from kde:/kde3 factory. Then used Yast to delete ONLY HAL and kde3-kio_sysinfo, over-riding to keep the existing/installed kdebase3_SuSE and its corresponding "lang" rpm. BTW, kde3-kio_sysinfo IS a dependency of kdebase3_Suse. Logged out then back in. Everything seems to work. A DVD inserted in the burner throws up the KDE "what do you want me to do" dialogue, and the DVD appears as normal in /media using Konq. I tried most items in the menu system, and all came up --- didn't try the discrete functionality of each, just made sure there wasn't a burp. So I guess that we are in good shape. The "My Computer" icon on the desktop still does squat-all, so I guess that "functionality" could be either fixed or deleted from the kde3 portion. BTW, Ilya, one update came in while I was testing, but looking at it, it says "nothing provides libnetsnmp.so.30 needed by kdeutils3-3.5.10-71.1.i586", so I passed on installing it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Right.

I removed this dependency.

I plan to replace it with the conventional "System storage" icon, analog of "My computer" in Windows and "Computer" in Gnome. Just have to figure out how to make it appear for all users by default.

This is new info. I will test tomorrow.

No, it doesn't. -- WBR Kyrill -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org
