[opensuse-kde3] 11.4 -> 13.1 update - good job Ilya/All
Ilya/All, I updated my laptop from 11.4 to 13.1. As part of the update, I moved my 11.4 ~/home, including ~/.config and ~/.kde dir from 11.4->13.1 before launching kde. For the most part, it went OK. There were only two issues that were noteworthy: 1 - kicker got completely scrambled leaving only the quicklaunch icons in kicker. The menu, the taskbar, the desktop page, systray and the clock were all blown away for some reason. Has anyone else experienced this or have an explanation why this could occur? Simple enough to fix, but just strange it happened. 2 - All desktop icons are gone. Generally I only show [trash], [home], and [system] on the desktop. These are gone. I can't find anywhere in kcontrol to bring them back. I recall just checking the ones I wanted and unchecking the ones I don't, but I can't find that module in kcontrol. Am I missing a module? Additionally, during install, there were several packages that I had to install 2-3 times before they actually installed. I would check the package for installation in YAST, the install would complete, I would check again, and no package was installed. It was like somehow YAST lost packages in its installer list. Dunno, strange, that was the first time I've experienced something like that since SuSE 7. (it was not just kde3 packages, but other repos as well) This brings up another observation: So many sub-packages makes kde3 difficult to install on openSuSE. It might be worth a review to see if it makes sense to just build the normal packages without so many subpackages. It would be a lot easier to install if the primary packages were: kdeaccessibility kdeaddons kdeadmin kdeartwork kdebase kdebindings kdeedu kdegames kdegraphics kdelibs kdemultimedia kdenetwork kdepim kdesdk kdetoys kdeutils kdevelop kdewebdev Leaving all the applications as separate packages. Even many of the apps are split into multiple subpackages (e.g. koffice, etc..) Regardless of whether any of the packages are shuffled around, I just wanted to drop a line and say: GOOD JOB WITH KDE3 ON 13.1 ILYA! (and the rest of the contributors). P.S. - Why is there no way to install KDE3 during initial install? I mean you can install LXDE, icewm, XFCE, minimum X, KDE or Gnome, but not KDE3?? I know this was a political issue in the 11.0 days, but now that we have a reasonably supported KDE3, why can't it be added to the installer? I mean if we offer LXDE on install, why the hell not KDE3? Haven't we grown up since the political KDE4 or nothing days of 11.X? Who would need to make the call in opensuse? -- David C. I tried to make a KDE3 pattern, but met with an objection from Stephen Kulow on the grounds that the pattern may confuse the KDE4 users. Also there was an apprehension that the KDE3 and KDE4 patterns may not work well together so that some KDE3 packages could contaminate KDE4 installation. Nevertheless, I made the pattern and put it into the KDE:KDE3 repository (it is used for 1-click install from this page: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE3 ). Regarding the installation option, I think the pattern is a pre-requisite for that, but it is not enough, someone should do the continuous installation testing. That said, there are KDE3 LiveDVDs in Suse Studio that allow installation option. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
Hi All, Is there problems with kicker ? I remember that I had. Gave up the installation of 13.1. Le lundi 14 juillet 2014, Ilya Chernykh a écrit :

<troll> I would have said: «…some KDE4 packages could contaminate KDE3…» like «…some Vista packages could contaminate XP…» Who wants the death of Open Suse ? Who could want it ? </troll> Thanks for keeping KDE3 alive, Patrick -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Patrick, I'm not sure. When I installed kde3 on 13.1, I moved my 11.4 ~/.kde settings from 11.4 to 13.1, so I thought that is what caused kicker to blow up. But, I did experience kicker "going nuts" on first launch of kde3 on 13.1. Here is a screenshot of my current kicker on 13.1 (same as my 11.4 after I set it back up): http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/openSuSE/131/kde3/kicker_131.jpg For me, here is what happened. On first launch: - I received about 5 kicker error dialogs (I should have saved them) - kicker was running fine but not applets were present, only quicklaunch - the quicklaunch applet had all my entries from 11.4 - there was no kmenu - there was no show desktop - there was no taskbar - there was no systray - there was no desktop pager - there was no clock - quicklaunch was centered in the middle of kicker - all autohide/layout settings were otherwise correct All I had to do to get kicker back the way it should be was to add all the missing applets back. You know, just right-click on kicker and add application/add applet to add kmenu, showdesktop, taskbar, systray, desktop pager and clock. Then all I had to do was rt-click on the (up arrow control) for each new applet on kicker and choose "move" to move them around and get them back in place. It works 100% fine after that. I don't know if this is a 13.1 problem, or if it was due to my moving 11.4 settings before starting, but I did have this problem on 13.1 install. Kicker has been fine since and everything else (except for those missing desktop icons... trash, system, home) is working perfectly as far as I can tell. All the kios (sftp, http, etc..), launchers, modin splash screens, menus, context menus all are working great. I did have that KSVGviewer issue, but I'm sure we can get that fixed. If you gave up on 13.1 install due to the kicker problem, try it again. If you have issues, post back and we will help you get it going. -- David C.
