[opensuse-kde3] Need people to voice support for KDE3 compatibility in LibreOffice
Some time ago KDE3 support has been removed from openSUSE's LibreOffice packages even though it is well featured by upstream. I have built LibreOffice with KDE3 support but my commits were rejected under various pretexts. A follow-up discussion emerged here: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2015-04/msg00119.html but no one voiced in support of this feature except me. I can build LibreOffice with KDE3 support in KDE:KDE3 but this will take a lot of OBS power and the package will be either outdated or will need constant fixing. That is I am calling now you folks who uses KDE3 to voice more strongly in support of restoration of KDE3 feature in LibreOffice. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

FWIW, I almost never use LO except to open files created by others. Consequently, my interest in LO is virtually nil, and so I skip nearly every thread with LO in the subject line, and only opened this because of the important keyword, KDE3. KDE3 remains my DE of choice, though there's only one problem left in TDE keeping me from switching (virtually no branches/depth/few categories in original menu starter style, same insanity as in KDE5, making it insanely difficult to find infrequently used apps). All that said, among the list of three, to my knowledge, only #2 has any relevance for me, and it's the single most pervasive annoyance since I switched to openSUSE KDE from OS/2. Linux has too many different file pickers, and every file picker I've seen in Linux is worse than the one I used in OS/2. Since I use it so little, I don't remember, but likely a significant reason I stay away from LO is its file picker. How and where would I, who uses it little and has little familiarity with it, "raise my voice" about file picker in LO? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I see. I could live without them. I'm also not very heavy LO user. But if there exists normal file selection dialogue, it would be nice. I'm not subscribed to factory list. First of all please test if the issues of compatibility with KDE4 mentioned in the linked discussion indeed exist. To do so, install LibreOffice (plus the libreoffice-kde3 package) from here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Ansus:/branches:/LibreOffice... If there are no issues, please post the results in the Factory mailing list so to confirm that this package is harmless to the KDE4 users. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
OK, thanks. I'll try. It will take some time, since my test machine is 32-bit and the packages are for 64-bit, so I'll need to do it on my main machine. Regards, Mark On Sun, Jun 21, 2015 at 1:38 AM, Ilya Chernykh <anixxsus@gmail.com> wrote:

This should not be the case, it is built against 13.2. If you are in trouble, please do not bother with the issue. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Not sure why, but I had to install a number of boost modules, then libpagemaker, all from Factory and only then I was able to install libreoffice 4.4.2. Maybe you used more advanced LO repository as a basis. Strange thing is that it looks fine in KDE4 (I did simple test creating the text document). But in KDE3 the window is distorted (every time I move the mouse cursor, the picture changes). Please see the snapshot. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9QBPYHUIHr_YzNMaTc1bEVuMk0/view?usp=sharin... I do not think I've seen it with original libreoffice 4.2. I'll re-install it later and check again. Hi, Ilya, Please disregard my previous observation. This is old HW with old NVIDIA card. This card requires NVIDIA driver of 173.xx series that is not supported any more. So the nouveau driver is used on this machine. This driver never worked well for me. I'll re-try on my main machine later and update you. Ilya, I eventually repeated it on my main system. Unfortunately the result is the same. It works fine with KDE4 (so here you are right, there is no conflict with kde4 extensions). But in KDE3 I see a lot of garbage on screen. I can attach snapshot, but it is basically the same as on old system: main area is OK, but menu bar, icons are garbled. when I hover with mouse over this area, the garbage changes its form but still stays there. After removing KDE3 extensions everything is OK again. It can be because of this commit by Trinity developer who broke the KDE3 integration: https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/2374/2/shell/inc/shell/tde_headers.h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

I'm reading the rejection reason in https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/295195 and it sounds like no-go (longer build, more dependencies). The linked factory discussion is neither looking good for the kde3 integration. So I'm curious if own LO build could work in the longterm. Let's say the package would be rebuilt infrequently so potential manual fixing could be minimized. My estimate is once in a month, with exceptions (urgent bugs).
From the SR I can't see the actual diff to enable kde3, maybe the automerging of spec could work flawlessly. Possibly, the factory LO.spec file could be tuned to make automerging more likely to pass, eg. adding some extra lines or markers.
That is I am calling now you folks who uses KDE3 to voice more strongly in support of restoration of KDE3 feature in LibreOffice.
As much as I'd like to see this succeed, I think KDE3 is more tolerated than welcome so I'm betting more on the DIY approach. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

Ilya, I'm sorry I missed this thread originally. If this was rejected in 13.2, then let us all make another concerted attempt to push the request through. Yes, it is frustrating to have any improvements rejected, but it is important enough to try again for the next release or have it approved as an update. I'll watch the list a little closer. If you are willing to try this again, I'll put effort in and gather support. -- David C. KDE3 support has been dropped from LibreOffice. https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92412 This is because it was broken and disturbed work of KDE4 and KDE5 users who had KDE3 libraries installed (because LibreOffice used KDE3 integration as a fallback in this case). https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89613 I suspect Trinity commits that broke compatiobility with the KDE3 libraries as the cause. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
